de-poldernaar-elixir-vintage-advertising-poster-1905
De Poldernaar Elixir Vintage Advertising Poster, 1905

De Poldernaar Elixir, created by the Belgian artist Litho Myncke in 1905, turns a beverage advertisement into a spirited rural vignette. A smiling gentleman in a brilliant red coat raises a small glass towards the viewer, while a horse, cart and village buildings extend the scene around him. Above, the name “DE POLDERNAAR” commands the sky in emphatic red capitals, with “ELIXIR” picked out beneath in yellow. The horizontal format gives the poster an unusually panoramic quality: product, personality and place are brought together beneath a broad expanse of blue and cloud-white sky.

The work belongs to a period when lithography had become central to European advertising. Posters needed to communicate at a glance, often in busy streets or commercial interiors, and designers responded with saturated colour, memorable figures and lettering treated as an integral part of the composition. Here the elixir is promoted not through a clinical display of the bottle or a dense catalogue of virtues, but through sociability and character. The raised glass, direct smile and rustic setting give the brand a genial public face, demonstrating how commercial graphics could borrow the pleasures of narrative illustration.

A closer look

The gentleman dominates the foreground, positioned just to the right of centre and enlarged against the receding village. His red coat supplies the composition’s strongest block of colour; its buttons and contrasting collar lend definition to the figure without interrupting the broad graphic treatment. The glass catches a small highlight, making it conspicuous despite its modest scale. His open expression and outward-facing pose establish an immediate relationship with the spectator, as though the toast extends beyond the scene itself.

A partially visible horse and the suggestion of a cart occupy the lower left, introducing movement while preventing the central figure from appearing isolated. Farther back, a pointed church steeple rises against the pale blue sky. On the opposite side, a low, sloping-roofed building bears the words “IN DEN POLDER”. These smaller elements create a compact sense of locality: the figure appears rooted in an inhabited landscape rather than placed before a purely decorative backdrop. Their muted tones also make the scarlet coat and yellow lettering seem still more forceful.

The typography is carefully woven into this spatial arrangement. “DE POLDERNAAR” spreads across the upper field in broad red lettering, its scale balanced by the figure below, while the smaller yellow “ELIXIR” provides a sharp warm accent. White clouds soften the surrounding blue and keep the emphatic lettering from overwhelming the illustration. Around the edge, a thin coloured border contains the expansive scene, and a small green vine motif adds a decorative flourish. Flat areas of colour, crisp contours and selective detail allow the design to remain legible while preserving its playful pictorial character.

Context and significance

At the turn of the twentieth century, advertising posters occupied a fertile territory between fine illustration and mass communication. Advances in colour lithography enabled designers to work with increasingly vivid palettes, while commercial competition encouraged instantly recognisable characters and assertive brand names. De Poldernaar Elixir reflects that visual culture particularly well: its message is direct, yet the surrounding village narrative gives the advertisement an identity richer than typography alone could provide.

The title itself reinforces the poster’s regional flavour: “De Poldernaar” is not merely presented as a name but attached visually to a landscape of road, horse, inn-like building and church spire. That meeting of bold promotional design and lightly comic storytelling makes Litho Myncke’s 1905 composition especially engaging. Even before the wording is fully read, the raised glass and radiant red coat have already delivered the essential message of welcome, conviviality and confident good cheer.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
