hasselt-notermans-vintage-advertising-poster-1927
Hasselt Notermans Vintage Advertising Poster, 1927

Hasselt Notermans, produced in 1927 by the lithographic firm Oscar de Rycker & Mendel, gives a beverage advertisement the swagger of a character portrait. Beneath emphatic white lettering, a long-haired man in theatrical historical dress raises a small glass to his lips while presenting the labelled bottle in his other hand. The warm yellow of his costume flares against a deep blue ground, with a broad black hat and small red plume completing the poster’s memorable silhouette.

The design belongs to the visually competitive world of interwar commercial printing, when lithography allowed advertisers to unite strong colour, legible text and sharply defined illustration. Posters of this kind had to communicate quickly: here, nearly everything has been pared back to brand name, bottle and drinker. Yet the figure’s extravagant costume gives the advertisement a personality beyond simple product display. The visible credit, “Création Et. O. DE RYCKER, S.A. Bruxelles-Forest”, also places the design within the professional culture of Brussels-area graphic production.

A closer look

The composition is organised around the diagonal formed by the raised glass and the bottle below. The man’s face occupies the centre, his eyes directed towards the drink as the rim meets his lips. Subtle highlights make the glass appear transparent, while the stem is articulated with tiny bead-like details. His softly flushed cheeks, curled hair and carefully modelled features bring an unexpectedly naturalistic note to an otherwise boldly simplified design.

Costume provides much of the poster’s decorative energy. A white ruff spreads beneath the chin in pleated, shadowed folds, separating the face from the brilliant yellow garment. The broad hat forms a dense black arc above the head, giving weight to the upper portion of the composition; at its edge, the red plume introduces a small but effective flash of movement. These concentrated accents of red and white stand out crisply against the dominant blue, yellow and black.

At the lower edge, the bottle acts as both object and secondary advertisement. Its label appears to repeat the drinker’s likeness, creating a compact image-within-an-image and linking the costumed character directly to the brand. Across the top, the white “HASSELT NOTERMANS” lettering is large, upright and immediately readable. The words do not compete with the illustration so much as crown it, while a narrow pale border contains the intense colour field.

Context and significance

Lithographic advertising in the early twentieth century often balanced painterly description with the flatter, more forceful language of modern graphic design. Hasselt Notermans demonstrates that balance particularly well. The face, hair, ruff and glass are treated with tonal nuance, but the deep blue background remains almost entirely free of incident. This absence of setting turns the figure into an emblem: there is no tavern, table or surrounding crowd to dilute the message.

The result is a compact study in commercial character-making. Humour, elegance and appetite are conveyed through pose rather than narrative, while the repeated branding fixes the name firmly within the composition. Almost a century after its creation, the poster remains engaging because its practical message is inseparable from its vivid theatricality.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
