WeiterlesenTitled “Harrisonburg,” this U.S. Geological Survey topographic map was created from 2002 mapping and issued with a 2004 imprint, capturing the city and its surrounding Virginia landscape at the beginning of the twenty-first century. At a 1:24,000 scale, it presents Harrisonburg with the precision and restraint characteristic of USGS quadrangles, balancing the built environment with the folded terrain around it. The map records a moment when the city’s educational, residential, and commercial growth was reshaping the central Shenandoah Valley. Streets, highways, neighborhoods, open land, and elevation are rendered together in a form that is both practical and quietly revealing: a scientific document that also serves as a portrait of place.
Harrisonburg appears here as a lively urban center anchored by James Madison University, whose presence has long influenced the city’s identity, economy, and expansion. The map shows the urban fabric spreading around major corridors, with residential neighborhoods and institutional areas arranged against a backdrop of hills, valleys, and open ground. Route 11, historically associated with the Valley Pike, and Route 33 provide important structural lines through the landscape, linking Harrisonburg to the broader Shenandoah Valley and beyond. These routes are more than transportation features; they reflect centuries of movement through the region, from early settlement and commerce to modern commuting, university life, and regional development.
The cartographic language is classic USGS: clear, disciplined, and designed for close reading. Contour lines describe the surrounding topography with particular force, tightening where the land rises sharply and opening where valley floors and gentler slopes appear. Urban areas are differentiated from natural features through a functional color palette, allowing roads, developed land, vegetation, and water features to be understood at a glance. This measured visual system makes the map valuable not only for navigation, but also for interpreting how Harrisonburg sits within its terrain. The city is not isolated on the page; it is embedded in a physical landscape of ridges, drainage patterns, hilltops, and undeveloped margins.
As a product of the U.S. Geological Survey, the map belongs to one of America’s most respected cartographic traditions. Founded to study and document the nation’s land, water, and natural resources, the USGS developed topographic mapping into an essential tool for scientists, planners, engineers, hikers, historians, and local governments. Its maps are admired for their accuracy, consistency, and ability to translate complex terrain into a readable visual form. In this Harrisonburg sheet, that institutional rigor is evident in the careful integration of elevation, transportation, settlement, and land cover. The result is a map that is authoritative without being ornamental, elegant precisely because of its clarity.
Historically, the map is especially interesting as a record of Harrisonburg around 2002, a period marked by growth tied to James Madison University, suburban expansion, and changing land use in the Shenandoah Valley. The surrounding hills and undeveloped areas shown here help frame the tension between urban development and the enduring rural and natural character of the region. For collectors, planners, or anyone with a connection to Harrisonburg, the map offers a detailed snapshot of a city in transition. It preserves not only streets and contours, but the spatial logic of a place shaped by education, transportation, topography, and the long geography of Virginia’s Valley.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
