WeiterlesenPublished in 1987 from survey data first gathered in 1964, the US Geological Survey’s “Salado” captures a Central Texas landscape at a revealing moment in its modern development. At a scale of 1:24,000, the map offers the intimate precision of the classic 7.5-minute quadrangle, where individual roads, waterways, contours, and settlement patterns combine to form a richly detailed portrait of place. Salado itself appears as the focal point, set within the rolling terrain of Bell County and framed by creeks, low hills, and transportation routes. The result is both a practical topographic record and a historical document, preserving the geographic character of the town and its surroundings before later decades of growth reshaped this corridor of Texas.
The map’s most compelling language is its contour work, through which the USGS translates the subtle rise and fall of the Central Texas landscape into elegant, readable form. Around Salado, the land is neither flat prairie nor dramatic mountain country, but a textured region of gentle hills, shallow valleys, drainage lines, and elevated divides. These contour lines reveal how water and settlement are shaped by terrain, guiding the eye toward creek beds, road grades, and the natural corridors that have long influenced movement through the area. For collectors, this kind of topographic detail gives the map a quiet sophistication: it is scientific, restrained, and visually rhythmic, turning elevation into pattern and geography into design.
Salado’s historical identity is closely tied to its position along important routes through Central Texas, and the map records that relationship with clarity. Interstate 35, one of the defining transportation arteries of the region, appears as a powerful modern presence, linking the town to the broader corridor between Austin, Waco, and beyond. Older roads and local highways intersect and branch around Salado, suggesting layers of movement that predate and accompany the interstate age. The 1964 survey data is especially evocative in this respect, showing the infrastructure and land-use patterns of a smaller Salado before the full effects of late twentieth-century expansion. Roads, parcels, and waterways together tell a story of connection, commerce, and gradual transformation.
Natural features give the map much of its regional character. Indian Creek and the Lampasas River help organize the surrounding terrain, their courses cutting through the landscape and providing both ecological and historical anchors. In Central Texas, such waterways were essential to settlement, agriculture, travel, and community formation, and their presence on the map lends depth to the depiction of Salado. Nearby hills, drainage channels, water bodies, and green spaces create a varied setting that reflects the meeting of human habitation and natural form. The map invites close reading: a creek crossing, a bend in a road, or a cluster of contours can suggest why people built where they did and how the land guided their choices.
Produced by the US Geological Survey, this map belongs to one of the great cartographic traditions of the modern era: the systematic mapping of the American landscape with scientific accuracy and visual discipline. USGS topographic maps are admired not only for their utility, but for their distinctive graphic language—contours, symbols, roads, streams, and place names arranged with remarkable balance. “Salado” is a fine example of that tradition, combining technical precision with historical resonance. It preserves a specific geography of Central Texas as understood through mid-century field surveys and later publication, making it valuable to collectors interested in Texas history, regional development, landscape change, or the understated beauty of authoritative topographic cartography.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, mark one meaningful place, or request one considered visual detail. See personalised map examples.
Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
