old-map-of-skidaway-island-georgia-by-usgs-1957-isle-of-hope-wilmington-river-wassaw-sound
Old Map of Skidaway Island, Georgia by USGS, 1957 – Isle of Hope, Wilmington River & Wassaw Sound

Published in 1959 from 1957 survey work, the USGS quadrangle titled “Isle of Hope” captures a richly detailed portrait of Georgia’s low country at a moment before later suburban expansion transformed much of the coastal landscape. Centered on Skidaway Island and the village-like settlement of Isle of Hope, the map reveals a world shaped by tidewater channels, salt marsh, wooded uplands, and narrow roads threading through a watery terrain. At 1:24,000 scale, it offers an intimate view of the relationship between land and water, showing the coastal fringe not as empty space but as a finely articulated environment of creeks, sounds, islands, and river mouths.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the precision and clarity that made its quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, scientists, and travelers. By the mid-twentieth century, USGS topographic mapping had become one of the great documentary projects of American geography, translating field surveys and aerial information into standardized yet deeply local portraits of the nation. Here, contour lines, road classifications, drainage patterns, and place names combine to create a disciplined but evocative image of Chatham County’s coastal edge. The map’s greens and blues are especially expressive: land, marsh, and water are differentiated with quiet elegance, allowing the viewer to read both elevation and hydrology at a glance.

Skidaway Island dominates the sheet, poised among the Wilmington River, Bull River, and the creeks and marshes that lace the surrounding estuary. Today the island is associated with residential communities such as The Landings, but this map records an earlier geography, when development was lighter and the island’s wooded interior remained closely tied to its tidal margins. Nearby Green Island, Chimney Creek, and the Little Ogeechee and Ogeechee river systems help situate Skidaway within the broader coastal network leading toward Wassaw Sound. The resulting composition is not merely topographic; it is ecological, showing how islands, rivers, marshes, and ocean-facing sounds interlock along Georgia’s Atlantic coast.

The cartographic character of the “Isle of Hope” quadrangle is particularly well suited to the region it depicts. In mountainous country, contours often dominate a topographic map; here, subtler forms of relief are set against the intricate movements of water. Marshlands appear as essential terrain rather than marginal space, and the branching tidal creeks suggest the constant exchange between freshwater, saltwater, mudflat, and grassland. This was a landscape of fishing, boating, transportation, and settlement patterns governed by tides as much as roads. State Route 204 and local routes provide evidence of growing connectivity, yet the map still gives primacy to natural channels and coastal forms.

As a historical document, this map offers a compelling snapshot of the Savannah-area coast in the late 1950s, before decades of residential development, infrastructure, and environmental change reshaped public understanding of the region. Isle of Hope, long valued for its waterfront setting, appears within a broader geography of islands and waterways rather than as a suburb of a larger metropolitan area. For collectors, historians, and admirers of coastal cartography, the sheet is notable for the way it preserves a transitional moment: modern survey methods applied to an older, tide-bound landscape. It invites comparison with the present, making visible both continuity and change in one of Georgia’s most distinctive coastal environments.

Cities, towns and places on this map

Skidaway Island

Isle of Hope

Green Island

Little Ogeechee River

Ogeechee River

Wilmington River

Bull River

Chimney Creek

Wassaw Sound

Landings at Skidaway Island

Various marshlands and creeks

State Route 204

Interstate Highway, potentially nearby

Historical context & cartographic details

Published by the United States Geological Survey, or USGS

Produced in 1957 and published in 1959

Historical 1:24,000 topographical map of coastal Georgia

Uses detailed survey data characteristic of USGS mapping

Color scheme features greens for land and blues for water

Shows topographical elevations, marshlands, waterways, and water-flow details

Reflects the geographical understanding of the area in the late 1950s

Provides a snapshot of the landscape before significant modern infrastructure and development altered the area

Looking for a particular place? Review the detailed images to confirm that the town, landmark or feature you have in mind appears on the map.
