Resources and Road Map of Western Canada, issued in 1952 by the Mundy Map Co., captures Western Canada at a moment when roads, rails, and resources were rapidly reordering the landscape. Known for its meticulous, utilitarian cartography, Mundy assembles British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon, and reaches into Alaska and the Northwest Territories in a single, legible field of color and annotation. The design balances clarity with post-war confidence: corridors of movement, tracts of timber, and belts of mineral wealth sit alongside delineated parklands and preserves. It is both instrument and narrative, a portrait of a region poised between frontier extraction and an emerging ethic of stewardship, rendered with the pragmatic elegance that defined Mundy’s mid-century work.

Transportation is the map’s living skeleton. The Alaska Highway runs like a spine northward, its mileage indicators marching through river crossings and mountain passes, while secondary roads knit together ranching country, mill towns, and remote settlements with uncommon thoroughness. Railways are crisply drawn, the steel arteries binding prairie, foothill, and port—Vancouver and Victoria anchoring the Pacific edge; Calgary and Edmonton commanding the plains; Fairbanks and Anchorage signaling the northern horizon. Trails and historic pack routes add deeper texture, evoking earlier paths of trade and exploration that still mattered to post-war travelers, survey crews, and supply chains pushing toward the continent’s rim.

Mundy’s red-marked resource tracts declare the economic thesis of the age. Timber belts sweep the coastal and interior forests; coal fields shadow the Rocky Mountain foothills; gold-bearing territories glint across the Yukon and the rugged north of British Columbia. The overlay is not abstract: roads and railheads converge upon these zones, showing how access begets industry. Trading posts and inland post offices punctuate the wilderness, indexing the cadence of settlement and logistics across immense distances. Read as a ledger of potential, the sheet reveals where mills might hum, mines sink shafts, and freighters load—an atlas of possibilities inscribed in the terrain itself.

The natural world is rendered with equal authority. The sheet’s post-war aesthetic—clean color coding, disciplined symbols, and dense yet readable annotation—conveys complex information with understated grace. An inset devoted to coastal British Columbia’s fishing resources pinpoints favored waters and species, from salmon to halibut and herring, extending the map’s utility from timber camps and haul roads to canneries, resorts, and anglers’ lore. In aggregate, this is a time capsule of 1952 Western Canada: a harmony (and tension) of highways and rails, mines and forests, fjords and peaks, parks and preserves. It is Mundy at his most purposeful—turning a vast, demanding region into a coherent, navigable vision of opportunity.

Mein Standardrahmen ist ein Galerie-Stil-Rahmen aus schwarzem Eschenholz. Er ist einfach und sieht ziemlich modern aus. Mein Standardrahmen ist etwa 20 mm (0,8 Zoll) breit.

Ich verwende super-klares Acryl (Plexiglas/Acrylt) für das Glas des Rahmens. Es ist leichter und sicherer als Glas – und es sieht besser aus, da die Reflexion geringer ist.

Sechs Standardrahmenfarben sind kostenlos erhältlich (schwarz, dunkelbraun, dunkelgrau, Eiche, weiß und antikgold).

Die meisten Karten, Kunstwerke und Illustrationen sind auch als gerahmte Leinwand erhältlich. Wir verwenden matte (nicht glänzende) Baumwollleinwand, spannen sie über einen nachhaltig beschafften Buchenrahmen und 'schweben' dann das Stück innerhalb eines Holzrahmens. Das Endergebnis ist ziemlich schön, und es gibt keine Verglasung, die im Weg ist.

Alle Rahmen werden "bereit zum Aufhängen" geliefert, entweder mit einer Schnur oder Halterungen auf der Rückseite. Sehr große Rahmen haben schwere Aufhängeplatten und/oder eine Montageschiene. Wenn Sie Fragen haben, können Sie bitte Kontakt aufnehmen.

Meine Karten sind äußerst hochwertige Reproduktionen von Originalkarten.

Ich beziehe originale, seltene Karten aus Bibliotheken, Auktionshäusern und Privatsammlungen auf der ganzen Welt, restauriere sie in meiner Londoner Werkstatt und erstelle dann mit speziellen Giclée-Tinten und -Druckern wunderschöne Karten, die sogar noch besser aussehen als das Original.

Meine Karten werden auf säurefreiem, mattem Archivpapier (nicht glänzend) gedruckt, das sich sehr hochwertig anfühlt und fast wie Karton aussieht. Technisch gesehen beträgt das Papiergewicht/die Papierdicke 10mil/200g/m². Es eignet sich perfekt zum Einrahmen.

Ich drucke mit UV-lichtbeständigen Ultrachrome-Giclée-Pigmenttinten von Epson – einige der besten Tinten, die Sie finden können.

Dazu verwende ich ein spezielles und einzigartiges Verfahren, das ich durch jahrelanges Studium alter Karten und Gespräche mit Forschern zum Verständnis der Chemie alternder Papiere entwickelt habe, und natürlich ... viel Übung!
