WeiterlesenPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Centifolia Anemonoides, published in 1817, presents a form of the cabbage rose in full, luxuriant flower. Two open blooms occupy the upper centre of the composition, their densely layered pink petals gathered around small, warm yellow centres. Below them, serrated leaves and a thorned stem provide a darker, more structural counterpoint, while several closed buds extend towards the upper right. Set against an unbroken cream ground, the plant appears both vividly present and carefully isolated for study.
Redouté was among the foremost flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a period in which botanical illustration served scientific enquiry, horticultural knowledge and cultivated taste at once. His work is distinguished by its ability to reconcile these purposes: plants are recorded with enough precision to make their structures legible, yet arranged with the poise of independent works of art. Roses became particularly closely associated with his career, and this 1817 study demonstrates the qualities for which his botanical images remain admired—clarity of observation, gentle tonal modelling and an unusually sensitive command of floral form.
A closer look
The two principal flowers are similar in scale but subtly different in character. Each is constructed from many fine-edged petals, some folding inwards around the centre and others opening broadly towards the pale background. Redouté’s delicate shifts from saturated rose pink to near-white at the turning edges prevent the blooms from becoming flat masses of colour. Minute, filament-like details in the yellow centres add a concentrated note of warmth amid the cooler pinks.
The lower half reveals the plant’s less ornamental anatomy. Leaves spread out in overlapping groups, their toothed margins crisply described and their central veins branching into finer networks. Variations from deep green to softer yellow-green suggest light falling from above, while restrained shadows distinguish one leaf from the next without disturbing the overall clarity. At the lower left, the exposed stem bears small thorns—a sharply observed detail that tempers the softness of the flowers.
The arrangement is asymmetrical but carefully balanced. The heavy open blossoms lean slightly towards the left, answered by buds and foliage rising on the right. Empty space remains essential: rather than surrounding the rose with garden scenery, Redouté gives every contour room to be read. Beneath the specimen, the caption names it in Latin and French: “Rosa Centifolia Anemonoides, La Centfeuilles Anemone.” The lettering quietly restores the image to its classificatory setting after the visual abundance above.
Context and significance
Botanical art of this period occupied a fertile border between scholarship and decoration. Accurate illustrations allowed plants to be compared and recognised, but they also addressed an expanding audience interested in gardens, collecting and natural history. Redouté’s particular achievement lay in preserving the identifying features of a specimen without reducing it to a diagram. The rose’s buds, thorns, leaf structure and flowering form are all plainly available to inspection, yet the stem has been composed with an elegance that rewards looking beyond identification.
Rosa Centifolia Anemonoides is especially compelling in the tension between fullness and restraint: extravagant, many-petalled blooms rise from a spare botanical arrangement, their richness sharpened by the open cream field. It is at once a close record of a cultivated rose and a demonstration of how disciplined observation can acquire decorative grace.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
