The “Los Angeles & Vicinity, 1945” map, produced by the renowned Automobile Club of Southern California, is a captivating artifact from the dawn of the postwar era. Its original title immediately evokes the bustling energy and rapid transformation of Los Angeles at a pivotal moment in history. Created in 1945, this map captures the intricate web of city streets and highways that defined Southern California’s urban landscape as the automobile revolution reshaped daily life and the city’s physical form. The map’s precise cartography offers a rare window into the heart of Los Angeles and its surrounding counties, making it an exceptional piece for collectors and enthusiasts of urban history.
What distinguishes this city map is its remarkable detail and scope, encompassing not only Los Angeles County but also Orange County and the western reaches of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The map is centered on the legendary Route 66, a symbol of American mobility and aspiration, and meticulously charts the arteries that powered the region’s explosive growth. Major thoroughfares such as Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard, and Pacific Coast Highway are elegantly rendered, offering a visual narrative of the city’s evolving connectivity and the central role of the automobile in shaping its neighborhoods.
This map is a veritable tapestry of Los Angeles’ most storied neighborhoods and landmarks. From the glamour of Hollywood and the elegance of Beverly Hills to the vibrant communities of Pasadena, Glendale, and Santa Monica, each area is distinctly marked, reflecting the diverse character of the metropolis. The inclusion of significant civic and cultural landmarks—such as the Los Angeles Civic Center, Exposition Park, the Los Angeles Coliseum, and Union Station—underscores the city’s emergence as a major cultural and economic hub in the mid-20th century.
Nature and recreation are beautifully integrated into the urban fabric, as seen in the depiction of expansive parks like Griffith Park, Elysian Park, and Exposition Park. The map also highlights the shimmering waters of Echo Park Lake and Silver Lake Reservoir, as well as the meandering course of the Los Angeles River. These green spaces and waterways provided essential respite and recreation for city dwellers, and their prominence on the map speaks to the city’s unique balance of urbanity and nature.
The Automobile Club of Southern California, the map’s esteemed creator, was a trailblazer in producing authoritative road maps for motorists. Their attention to detail and commitment to accuracy are evident in every aspect of this 1945 edition. For collectors, historians, and anyone with a passion for Los Angeles, this map is not merely a navigational tool but a work of art—an enduring testament to a city in motion, on the cusp of becoming the world-renowned metropolis we know today.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
