amer-jacques-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-1920
Amer Jacques Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster, 1920

J. L. Goffart’s Amer Jacques, dated 1920, turns a beverage advertisement into a spirited outdoor celebration. At its centre, a jockey sits astride a glossy chestnut horse and raises his glass with theatrical good humour. Beside him, a gentleman in a black bowler hat answers the toast, while the saturated green of the surrounding landscape gives their pink, blue, cream and brown clothing unusual clarity. The result is both convivial and carefully staged: an instantly readable scene in which sporting excitement, sociability and brand identity become inseparable.

Created by the Belgian artist Goffart at a time when commercial posters were an increasingly prominent part of urban visual culture, the design belongs to an era in which advertisers relied on illustration as much as written persuasion. Rather than presenting the drink in isolation, Goffart constructs an entire social world around it. The association with horses, smart dress and an outdoor gathering lends Amer Jacques an air of fashionable leisure, while the product itself is reiterated through bottles, glasses and branded cases. Its commercial message is direct, but the storytelling gives the poster a life beyond straightforward promotion.

A closer look

The horse and rider establish the composition’s principal vertical axis. The jockey’s white cap catches the eye against the darker woodland, while his blue vest and pink shirt form a bright sequence of colour above the horse’s warm chestnut coat. Subtle folds in the clothing and highlights along the animal’s flank prevent these broad areas of colour from appearing static. Most animated of all is the raised glass: a small, gleaming detail held at the precise point where the figure’s upward gesture meets the open space around him.

At lower centre, the bowler-hatted man provides a grounded counterweight to the mounted figure. His long dark coat cuts a strong silhouette, and his upturned face directs attention back towards the jockey. Behind them, spectators in hats and formal clothes are distributed across the middle distance, some carrying umbrellas. They are less sharply emphasised than the central pair, allowing the gathering to recede gently into the densely wooded setting while still suggesting the bustle of a public occasion.

The explicitly commercial elements are concentrated around the edges of the action. At lower left, cases marked “AMER JACQUES” sit close to the foreground; at lower right, a bottle and two glasses are arranged on a tray. These objects create a visual path across the foot of the design and ensure that the celebratory toast remains connected to the advertised drink. Above, the name “Amer Jacques” appears in prominent flowing script, its curves contrasting with the sturdier forms of horse, figures and packing cases. A green border gathers the various elements into a single emphatic graphic field.

Context and significance

Amer Jacques reflects the persuasive language of early twentieth-century beverage advertising, in which a product could be sold through atmosphere, character and implied social ritual. The poster does not labour its message with extensive text. Instead, it offers a memorable tableau of shared pleasure: raised glasses, animated faces, polished attire and a well-groomed horse. Such economy is central to effective poster design, where the subject, brand name and emotional tone must be grasped quickly.

Goffart balances that clarity with an abundance of incidental detail. The reflections in the glasses, cursive lettering on the cases, varied spectators and layered greenery reward slower inspection without weakening the bold central action. Cheerful yet controlled, the design preserves the visual confidence of 1920 advertising while offering a particularly engaging glimpse of the period’s association between branded drink, spectacle and sociable outdoor life.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
