Seguir leyendoDesign for the cover of the almanac ‘The Blue Rider’ VIII (1911) by Wassily Kandinsky captures the radical spirit that reshaped European art on the eve of abstraction. Conceived for the pioneering Der Blaue Reiter circle, this cover design channels the group’s belief in color, music, and spiritual resonance as catalysts for modern expression. Rather than illustrating a scene, Kandinsky arranges vivid blocks of blue, yellow, red, and green into a rhythmic, abstract tableau—suggesting a rider, a steed, and drifting clouds through pure shape and gesture. The result is playful yet intense, a compact manifesto for early 20th‑century innovation.
This museum-quality fine art print is available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas, crafted with richly pigmented inks for enduring color. Choose from a wide range of sizes, with optional borders and professional framing to suit your space. The Unique Maps Co. also offers personalization—such as custom titling, dedication lines, or adjusted margins—so your print arrives ready to hang or gift.
Wassily Kandinsky stands among the most influential artists of the modern era and a central figure in Expressionism. Around 1911, the year of this design, he was articulating a new visual language that paralleled his writings on the spiritual power of art. His leadership within Der Blaue Reiter, alongside peers like Franz Marc, helped pivot European painting away from depiction and toward an inner, musical logic of color and form.
The almanac for which this cover was created announced a decisive break from academic tradition. It gathered essays, images, and ideas that championed artistic freedom and new ways of seeing. As a cover, Kandinsky’s design had a practical job—catching the eye—yet it did more: it set the tone for an entire movement, telegraphing the almanac’s embrace of experimentation and its open invitation to interpretive, personal response.
Visually, the piece is alive with contrast and motion. Dominant passages of blue arc through the composition like horned or crescent forms, while a central glow of yellow and vibrant notes of red activate the surface. Curving, organic silhouettes imply a rider and horse without pinning them down, and softly edged, cloud-like shapes breathe space into the field. The brushwork feels loose and wash-like, enhancing the sense of spontaneity and musical rhythm—qualities that make this image as engaging across a room as it is rewarding up close. Owning this print brings a cornerstone of early modern design into your home: compact, vivid, and endlessly interpretable.
Whether you’re celebrating a new home, marking a birthday, or seeking an inspired Christmas, Mother’s Day, or Father’s Day gift, this Kandinsky print is a thoughtful choice for art lovers and design aficionados alike—especially anyone drawn to the history of abstraction, bold color, or the legacy of Der Blaue Reiter.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
