eckert-winter-s-vintage-bock-beer-poster-1877
Eckert & Winter’s Vintage Bock Beer Poster, 1877

Eckert & Winter’s Bock – New York, produced by A. Hoen & Co. in 1877, turns a beverage advertisement into a spirited theatrical procession. A crowned figure in richly patterned dress rides at the front of a cart, raising a beer stein as four goats surge across the foreground. Above them, the name “ECKERT & WINTER’S BOCK” commands the composition, with “BOCK” picked out in emphatic red; the quieter “NEW YORK” beneath anchors this fantastic scene to its commercial setting.

The goats supply more than comic energy. Bock is a strong beer historically associated with German brewing, and the word Bock also means a male goat in German. Nineteenth-century brewers and advertisers frequently exploited that convenient visual pun, making the animal an instantly recognisable emblem of the beer style. Here the joke is expanded into an elaborate pageant: beer becomes a royal arrival, complete with crown, ceremonial costume and a lively animal team. Created during a period of substantial German influence on American brewing culture, the poster shows how commercial imagery could combine Old World associations with the directness required by a competitive urban market.

A closer look

The composition moves strongly from left to right. The regal drinker, positioned towards the central-left area, forms the brightest concentration of colour: his red costume and ornamented cape stand out against the cooler blue sky and muted landscape. The raised stein provides a small but crucial focal point, its pale highlights separating it clearly from the figure’s darker clothing. His pose is ceremonious, but the goats introduce a less dignified, more mischievous rhythm beneath him.

Each animal is given a slightly different posture and expression. Their angled legs, thrust heads and overlapping bodies suggest a team caught in mid-charge rather than arranged for display. Fine strokes describing their brown fur contrast with the poster’s broader areas of flat colour. Tracks across the lower ground reinforce this sense of forward momentum, while a fence, patches of grass and scattered trees establish a semi-rural foreground around the speeding cart.

Behind the procession, the setting becomes more complex. Buildings, visible windows and smoking chimneys introduce an industrial note, while an archway opens towards a more distant landscape. These receding layers give the advertisement unusual spatial depth: the fantastic foreground spectacle appears to burst out from a recognisable world of roads, architecture and manufacture. Warm reds and earthy browns are balanced by green vegetation, cream passages and the graduated blue of the sky, allowing the principal figures to remain legible amid considerable detail.

Context and significance

A. Hoen & Co. belonged to the flourishing world of nineteenth-century American commercial printing, in which increasingly ambitious colour imagery served businesses, institutions and mass audiences. Beverage advertising was particularly suited to this kind of visual invention. A poster needed to communicate its name quickly, but it could also create a memorable personality for the product through humour, character and spectacle. The hierarchy here is carefully managed: bold lettering identifies the brewer and beer, the red word “BOCK” delivers immediate emphasis, and the goat-drawn procession turns that name into a scene unlikely to be mistaken for any other.

The result is both advertisement and comic fantasy. Its pleasure lies in the contrast between the grand and the unruly: royal costume and ceremonial gesture above, expressive goats and flying movement below. Even the distant industrial buildings contribute to the effect, connecting an extravagant brewing allegory with the working, commercial landscape of nineteenth-century New York.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
