Seguir leyendoGérard Portielje’s Elixir d’Anvers, created in 1907, turns a beverage advertisement into a compact comic character study. A jovial, moustachioed man in a dark military-style uniform sits beside the prominently displayed bottle, raising a small glass of golden liquid in an unmistakable toast. His broad smile, relaxed cigar and expansive pose give the composition its convivial personality, while the large title above ensures that the brand remains immediately legible.
Portielje was a Belgian artist associated with genre scenes as well as advertising-related work, and the poster draws effectively on both traditions. Rather than presenting the drink as an isolated commodity, he places it within an anecdotal scene, using facial expression, gesture and costume to suggest sociability and good humour. This approach belonged to an increasingly sophisticated culture of illustrated advertising in early twentieth-century Europe, as brands sought distinctive personalities and memorable narratives. The French word “Anvers” — Antwerp — also gives the product name a clear geographical identity.
A closer look
The figure occupies the central foreground, his dark uniform establishing a strong tonal mass against the softer background. Warm browns and near-blacks are relieved by cooler blue notes, while bright illumination across the face draws attention to the man’s lifted cheeks, moustache and genial expression. Subtle shadows beneath the chin lend weight to the head, and fine parallel marks in the hair and clothing prevent the broad areas of colour from becoming visually flat.
Two objects animate the man’s hands. The raised glass catches a sharp highlight, making the yellow-gold elixir appear especially luminous; lower down, a cigar is held with casual ease. Together they establish a mood of leisurely enjoyment without the need for elaborate surroundings. A glimpse of the wooden chair remains visible at the side, but the setting is deliberately understated, allowing pose and gesture to carry the scene.
The bottle at the right forms a second focal point. Upright, gleaming and carefully labelled, it answers the vertical presence of the seated figure while remaining distinct from him. Its smooth surface contrasts with the textured uniform and cigar, and its decorative label introduces a smaller field of graphic detail. Above, the bold lettering of “Elixir d’Anvers” crowns the composition. The eye consequently travels in a clear sequence: from the bottle and figure, to the raised drink, and finally to the name of the product.
Context and significance
Advertising posters of this period often depended on a swift hierarchy of attention: a recognisable figure, an emphatic gesture, a clearly presented product and typography that could be read at a glance. Portielje handles those requirements with considerable pictorial warmth. The background fades through beige and lighter tones rather than competing with the foreground, while concentrated highlights make the glass, bottle and face appear to emerge from the richer browns around them.
What distinguishes Elixir d’Anvers is the ease with which commercial clarity and painterly observation coexist. The label and title deliver the message, but it is the sitter’s character — his animated face, loosely held cigar and ceremonious little toast — that makes the advertisement memorable. Portielje sells not simply a drink but an atmosphere of geniality, rendered with the narrative instinct of a genre painter and the directness demanded by modern graphic promotion.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
