Seguir leyendoFavor, Apéritif au Quinquina à base de Vins Vieux, dated 1910, turns the ritual of taking an aperitif into a confident piece of commercial theatre. An elegantly dressed man in a pale grey suit raises a glass of vivid red drink, smiling out from the composition as though offering a toast. Around him, the anonymous designer has assembled an abundant display of bottle, filled glasses and grapes, all set against a deep brown ground beneath the emphatic scarlet name ‘FAVOR’.
The poster belongs to an era in which advertising was becoming an increasingly conspicuous part of urban visual culture. Designed to be understood quickly in public, such works combined simplified forms, saturated colour and assertive lettering to give a product a memorable personality. Here, the French-language wording identifies Favor as an apéritif au quinquina—a wine-based aperitif flavoured with quinquina—made from aged wines. Rather than merely listing these qualities, the design associates the drink with sociability, polish and plentiful hospitality.
A closer look
The composition is carefully staged around the raised glass. Its red contents provide a concentrated point of colour near the man’s face, while his bent arm directs the eye down towards the prominently labelled Favor bottle. From there, the arrangement expands across the pale tablecloth: several further glasses repeat the same warm red, transforming a single serving into the suggestion of a gathering. Small white highlights sharpen the rims and surfaces of the glassware against the darker background.
In the foreground, a woven basket overflows with purple and green grapes. Their rounded forms and varied colours soften the poster’s bold geometry while reinforcing the drink’s basis in wine. The pale suit, white table and cream accents create a bright central zone, strongly separated from the enveloping chocolate-brown field. Fresh greens and deep fruit tones animate this lighter area, producing an effective balance between elegance and abundance.
Typography supplies the design’s firmest structure. ‘FAVOR’ stretches across the upper part of the poster in large red capitals, functioning both as brand name and visual headline. Below, the more descriptive wording—‘Apéritif au Quinquina à base de Vins Vieux’—explains the product, while ‘Louis Chantal et Fils Bruxelles’ anchors it to its commercial identity in Brussels. The hierarchy is immediate: name first, convivial scene second, product information last. Even the slight asymmetry of the figure, positioned away from the exact centre, leaves room for the table display to complete the sales message.
Context and significance
Quinquina aperitifs formed part of a broad European culture of aromatised and fortified wine drinks. Their advertising frequently drew upon the conventions of fashionable leisure: smart clothes, gleaming glasses and the poised moment before drinking. Favor’s anonymous designer handles those conventions with particular directness. The spokesman is neither remote nor ceremonious; his open expression and raised glass establish an immediate rapport with the passer-by.
What gives the poster its continuing visual force is the economy with which information and atmosphere are combined. The commanding brand name can be read at a glance, while closer attention reveals a compact still life of grapes, bottle and repeated red drinks. It is at once an advertisement and a finely organised example of early twentieth-century graphic persuasion, presenting refinement not as austerity but as colour, company and generous provision.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
