Seguir leyendoJoseph Stall’s Champagne Joseph Perrier, created around 1929, turns a bottle of champagne into the climax of a spirited piece of visual theatre. A woman dressed as an extravagant bunch of golden-yellow grapes raises the bottle above her head, her sweeping pose set against an uninterrupted field of deep blue. The palette is emphatic rather than naturalistic: yellow, blue and red are arranged for maximum visibility, while the tightly cropped composition keeps attention fixed on the costumed figure, the bottle and the Joseph Perrier name.
Stall was a French artist active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrated posters had become a central feature of European commercial culture. Advertising for luxury goods demanded more than straightforward information: it needed to make a brand memorable amid the visual competition of the modern street. Here, refinement is combined with playful spectacle. Grapes—the source of champagne—are transformed into costume, while the celebratory gesture gives the product the energy of a stage performance.
A closer look
The figure is constructed around a cluster of large, rounded grapes that expands across the centre of the design like an improbable skirt. Each yellow orb is crisply defined, with small highlights lending the otherwise flat graphic forms a suggestion of volume. A green ribbon encircles the woman’s waist, introducing a narrow bridge of colour between the warm costume and the cool ground. Her animated posture prevents the abundant circular forms from becoming static: one arm extends upwards towards the bottle, carrying the eye diagonally through the composition.
The bottle occupies the upper part of the poster, held clear of the costume so that its silhouette and label remain easy to read. Subtle pale highlights give it a polished sheen, while the woman’s delicately drawn features and playfully arranged hair provide a lighter, more characterful counterpoint to the design’s broad areas of colour. There is virtually no setting and little conventional depth. Instead, Stall relies on overlap, gesture and sharp chromatic contrast to establish a clear order of attention.
Along the lower edge, the words “CHAMPAGNE JOSEPH PERRIER” appear in forceful red lettering. This warm red acts as a second visual accent after the grape costume, standing assertively against the blue and anchoring the figure above. The arrangement is immediately legible: first the brilliant yellow cluster, then the raised bottle, and finally the brand name. It is an economical sequence, achieved without decorative borders or incidental background detail.
Context and significance
By the late 1920s, poster design had developed a language particularly well suited to branded food and drink: abbreviated forms, limited palettes, conspicuous lettering and a single memorable conceit. Stall’s design shares that graphic economy while retaining something of theatrical costume and popular entertainment. Rather than picturing vineyards, cellars or a formal dining table, it personifies champagne through movement, wit and display.
The poster is especially engaging for the way it makes commercial clarity and visual exuberance serve the same purpose. Its grape-clad performer is humorous without becoming chaotic, and its strong contrasts remain disciplined by the spare blue field. The result is both an advertisement for Joseph Perrier and a revealing example of how interwar graphic art could compress product, mood and brand identity into one instantly recognisable scene.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
