Seguir leyendoPublished in 1962 from work created in 1961, “Athens, Ohio” presents the city and its surrounding Appalachian foothills through the precise, disciplined language of the U.S. Geological Survey. At 1:24,000 scale, it belongs to the classic USGS topographic tradition: a close-reading map, attentive not only to streets and settlements, but to the subtle rise and fall of the land itself. Athens appears as the principal populated center, its road networks and developed areas set within a larger terrain of wooded ridges, stream valleys, reservoirs, and rural routes. The result is a vivid early-1960s portrait of southeastern Ohio, capturing both the built environment and the enduring geographic forces that shaped it.
The map’s most compelling visual feature is its dense choreography of contour lines, which reveal the undulating character of the Athens landscape. Hills, ridges, hollows, and valley floors emerge with remarkable clarity, emphasizing the region’s position within the dissected uplands of southeastern Ohio. The Hocking River anchors the scene, threading through the terrain and helping explain the placement of roads, neighborhoods, and open land. Smaller streams and minor waterways branch across the sheet, tracing natural drainage patterns that remain essential to understanding local settlement and movement. This is a map in which topography is not background decoration, but the central drama: every road bend and developed corridor responds to the shape of the land.
Athens itself is rendered as a compact but growing urban center, its residential and commercial street networks carefully distinguished from the surrounding countryside. The early 1960s were a period of expanding automobile infrastructure and suburban development across much of the United States, and this map preserves a revealing moment in that transition. U.S. Route 33 and Ohio Route 32 appear as important corridors, linking Athens to the broader region while also reshaping patterns of access and growth. The relationship between town, highway, river, and hillside is especially striking. Rather than presenting Athens in isolation, the map situates it within a web of routes, valleys, wooded slopes, and watercourses that define everyday movement through the area.
To the northeast, Strouds Run State Park and its surrounding landscape add a strong natural counterpoint to the urban and infrastructural details of Athens. The map’s use of color, line, and symbol follows the familiar USGS grammar: blue for water, brown for elevation, green for wooded or vegetated areas, and crisp black and red markings for cultural and transportation features. Numerous small lakes, reservoirs, streams, and hollows enliven the composition, giving the sheet an unusually rich environmental texture. These details make the map valuable not merely as a navigational document, but as a historical record of land use, drainage, forest cover, and recreational geography at a specific moment in time.
As a work of government cartography, “Athens, Ohio” exemplifies the USGS commitment to accuracy, legibility, and national geographic documentation. Yet beyond its technical precision, the map carries a quiet historical resonance. It records Athens before decades of later development altered roads, neighborhoods, park access, and the relationship between settlement and surrounding open land. For collectors, local historians, and admirers of American topographic mapping, it offers a finely detailed view of a city shaped by water, relief, and regional routes. Its appeal lies in the union of scientific mapping and place-memory: a measured, elegant depiction of Athens and the ridged Ohio country that surrounds it.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
