A rare and very unusual map of the United States illustrating the important people and places of African Americans. The map was drawn by Louise E. Jefferson in 1946 and published by the National Council of Churches.
The map celebrates a broad cross-section of the achievements of black Americans, including athletes, writers, entertainers, scientists, educators and more. Considering when this map was published, it was very "ahead of its time" in celebrating the successes of (as the map calls them) negroes in America.
Around the edge of the map are portraits of some very famous people indeed, including Booker T Washington, Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, W. E. B. Du Bois, Duke Ellington and others. Please take a look at the listing images and admire the detail of this map.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 160 inches (400cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, I have a similar map highlighting Native Americans in North America: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1022884882/old-map-of-native-americans-1944-indians
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from the US or who is interested in the history of black people in America.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.
Check my canvas maps collection to see which maps are currently available on canvas.
Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
