Standardized symbology distinguishes municipal seats from minor villages, classifies roads and tracks, and differentiates perennial waterways from seasonal courses. A calibrated contour interval and shaded relief cooperate to model landforms without clutter, and a neat geodetic grid anchors the island within the national reference frame. In the early 1960s, such sheets were not mere guides but instruments of modernization—tools for engineers, planners, and travelers—here pressed into service to render Mallorca with authoritative calm.

Physical geography is the narrative’s protagonist. The west is dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana, with the Alfabia Mountains forming a distinctive massif above deep torrent valleys, their limestone spines cut by barrancs that run swift in winter and vanish in summer. Eastward the relief relaxes into the cultivated Es Pla, its gentle undulations and alluvial fans fanning toward Llevant’s rolling hills. The north terminates in a double amphitheater of water—Badia de Pollença and Badia d’Alcúdia—while the needle of Formentor and other serrated headlands test the sea. Marsh symbols trace low-lying wetlands near Alcúdia, and forest tints stipple higher slopes. Along the perimeter, depth soundings, coastal contours, and named capes translate the meeting of island and Balearic Sea into a lucid, navigable edge.

Human settlement is mapped as a living lattice. Palma, the capital, radiates roads across the island, their hierarchies plainly graded as they climb toward the passes and fold back to the plains. Inca sits inland as a pivotal market hub on the way north, while Manacor anchors the east with links to Felanitx and the surrounding Llevant countryside. Marratxí bridges Palma’s metropolitan reach; Sineu marks the island’s heart at a historic crossroads. Along the northern bays, Alcúdia and Pollença face sheltered waters and fortified histories. Primary routes and lesser caminos are traced with care, revealing how movement threads through orchards and terraces, over saddles in the Alfabia chain, and out toward fishing ports. The cartography also situates Mallorca within its archipelago, with coastal orientation points acknowledging the sea road toward Mahón.

Read as a mid‑century document, the map offers a clear view of Mallorca on the cusp of change. The political fabric—municipal boundaries and traditionally recognized comarcal regions—sits atop a physical template still dominated by agriculture: the patterned fields of Es Pla, vine and almond districts near the interior towns, and pastoral uplands in the Tramuntana. Place-names are rendered in the official forms of the period, preserving the toponymic conventions of 1963. Natural features—streams classed as torrents, marshes, forested slopes, and dune-backed strands—are given equal billing with human works, inviting a dialogue between permanence and seasonality that defines island life. Mi marco estándar es un marco de madera de fresno negro estilo galería. Es simple y tiene un aspecto bastante moderno. Mi marco estándar tiene alrededor de 20 mm (0.8 in) de ancho.
