Step into the vibrant world of 1930s Americana with “Delaware,” an original pictorial map crafted by the renowned Ruth Taylor White in 1935. This exceptional work is more than a geographical representation; it is a celebration of Delaware’s unique identity, rendered in a style that blends historical reverence with whimsical artistry. The map’s original title, simply “Delaware,” hints at its focus: an intimate, detailed exploration of the First State, capturing its spirit through a colorful tapestry of illustrations. As part of a larger series of state maps, this piece stands out for its ability to encapsulate both the essence and the evolution of Delaware at a pivotal moment in American history.
Ruth Taylor White, celebrated for her imaginative approach to cartography, brings Delaware to life with a flourish of vibrant colors and playful, cartoon-like vignettes. Her artistry is unmistakable, transforming the map into a lively tableau where every corner tells a story. The map’s design is not merely decorative; it is deeply informative, using visual storytelling to highlight the state’s most cherished features and industries. White’s work is a testament to her skill in merging artistic creativity with historical accuracy, making her maps highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs of both cartography and American culture.
The map’s thematic richness is immediately apparent in its depiction of Delaware’s diverse landscapes and industries. Sweeping illustrations of agricultural activity, from lush farmlands to bustling poultry scenes, underscore the state’s rural heritage and economic backbone. The Delaware River and Delaware Bay are prominently featured, their sinuous blue lines a reminder of the waterways that have shaped the state’s history and commerce. Along the Atlantic coast, lively beach scenes and maritime motifs evoke the state’s enduring relationship with the sea, while references to the shipbuilding industry nod to Delaware’s pivotal role in early American industry.
Historical and cultural context are woven seamlessly into the map’s fabric. Scenes referencing Native American heritage and colonial settlement honor the region’s deep-rooted past, while visual allusions to the DuPont chemical industry highlight Delaware’s emergence as a center of innovation. Perhaps most striking is the proud proclamation of Delaware as the “First State,” a nod to its distinction as the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution. County boundaries—New Castle, Kent, and Sussex—are elegantly illustrated, each area adorned with motifs that reflect its local character and historical significance.
Completing this captivating portrait are the state’s towns and cities, each rendered with a charm that reflects their modern-day prominence. Wilmington, Dover, Newark, and Middletown, among others, are artfully depicted, their locations anchoring the map in both time and place. The inclusion of these settlements, alongside evocative images of local wildlife and natural resources, creates a layered narrative that invites viewers to explore Delaware’s past and present. For collectors and enthusiasts, this map is not only a visual delight but also a meaningful artifact—an invitation to journey through the storied landscapes and vibrant culture of Delaware as seen through the eyes of one of America’s most distinctive mapmakers.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
