| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |
Mapas enmarcados

Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Indica Pumila (Flore Simplici), dated 1817, presents a single-flowered rose with characteristic clarity and restraint. One open pink bloom occupies the upper right of the composition, its five broad petals spreading around a finely articulated yellow centre. A smaller yellow bud and a branching spray of green leaves extend to the left, giving the specimen an asymmetrical, gently rising structure against a pale, spacious ground.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, admired for combining close observation with an unusually graceful sense of design. His flower studies belong to a period in which horticulture, plant classification and ornamental illustration were closely connected: a botanical plate was expected to communicate form accurately, yet it could also possess the poise of an independent work of art. Here, the rose is not embedded in a garden or arranged as part of a bouquet. Isolated for sustained examination, it becomes both specimen and portrait.
A closer look
The open flower immediately commands attention, but its colour is carefully modulated rather than uniform. Deeper pink gathers towards the edges and folds of the petals, while paler passages suggest their thinness and curvature. Fine veins move outwards across the surface, and subtle shading gives each petal a distinct overlap. At the centre, the clustered yellow stamens provide the most concentrated area of texture and warm colour.
The foliage introduces a more intricate rhythm. Serrated leaves fan out around the stem in varied greens, from deeper, cooler tones to younger leaves touched with yellow. Their veins are precisely described, while small changes in angle prevent the branch from appearing diagrammatic. At lower left, the stem and fresh growth create a quiet counterweight to the expansive flower above. The unopened yellow bud near the centre-left is particularly effective: modest in scale, it links the rose’s warm centre to the surrounding greenery and suggests another stage in the plant’s development.
Redouté makes generous use of negative space. The pale beige background contains no setting, shadowed interior or decorative border to distract from the specimen. Instead, the eye can follow the plant’s structure from stem to leaf, bud and mature bloom. Beneath the illustration, the botanical title Rosa Indica Pumila (flore simplici) is accompanied by the French label Petit Rosier du Bengale (à fleurs simples). These inscriptions anchor the elegant arrangement in the classificatory purpose of botanical illustration.
Context and significance
Redouté’s reputation rests especially on his depictions of roses, lilies and other cultivated flowers. Working at a time of intense European interest in gardens and newly documented plant varieties, he developed a visual language in which scientific usefulness did not diminish delicacy. His specimens are legible—the leaf margins, petal structure and growth of the stem can all be studied—but they are also composed with great sensitivity to balance, interval and silhouette.
Rosa Indica Pumila (Flore Simplici) is particularly engaging because of its economy. Rather than relying on an elaborate cluster of blossoms, Redouté gives one open rose, one bud and a measured spread of foliage sufficient presence to fill the page. The result rewards both botanical curiosity and close visual attention: an image in which the smallest serration, vein and shift of pink contributes to the character of the whole.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
