| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |
Mapas enmarcados

Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Lucida, dated 1817 and associated with his early nineteenth-century series of rose studies, presents a flowering branch with characteristic spaciousness and restraint. Soft pink blossoms gather in the upper right, their loosely layered petals opening around fine yellow stamens, while the thorned stem descends diagonally through serrated green foliage. A deeper pink bud and a small red rose hip extend the study beyond the fully opened flower, quietly recording different stages in the plant’s cycle.
Redouté was admired for reconciling two demands that could easily pull botanical illustration in different directions: the precision needed to document a specimen and the visual refinement expected of a work made for collectors. At a time of intense European interest in identifying, classifying and publishing the natural world, his flowers were valued as botanical records yet composed with an artist’s sensitivity to balance, colour and empty space. Rosa Lucida exemplifies that union. Every thorn, vein and petal edge is observed closely, but the branch is never reduced to a dry scientific diagram.
A closer look
The composition is built around an elegant diagonal. From the lower left, the stem rises and bends towards the cluster of flowers above, its irregular course giving the specimen a natural, lightly animated posture. Leaves project at different angles rather than forming a symmetrical pattern: some turn towards the light, while others deepen into cooler green shadow. Their sharply toothed margins and clearly traced veins provide a crisp structural counterpoint to the yielding forms of the petals.
Redouté’s handling of the blossoms is particularly subtle. Pale areas make the petals appear almost luminous against the neutral ground, while blush pink strengthens around their folds and outer edges. The centres are comparatively concentrated, with touches of yellow punctuating the otherwise harmonious relationship between pink and green. Fine pale lines follow the creases of individual petals, allowing the viewer to understand how each bloom curls, overlaps and opens without the modelling ever becoming heavy.
Smaller details reward attention. Thorns interrupt the smooth stem at intervals; the unopened bud introduces a denser note of colour above the foliage; and the red hip near the lower portion of the branch carries minute remnants at its crown. Together these elements broaden the study from a portrait of blossom alone into a more complete account of the rose’s structure. Beneath the generous field of negative space, the botanical name Rosa Lucida anchors the specimen with the concise authority of a scientific plate.
Context and significance
Redouté’s rose studies belong to a period when botanical publications served several audiences at once. They assisted the study and comparison of plants, recorded specimens cultivated in gardens, and appealed to readers for whom flowers were also objects of aesthetic fascination. His achievement lay not merely in accuracy, but in making accuracy graceful: stems become compositional lines, leaves establish rhythm, and individual blooms retain their distinct botanical character while forming a coherent arrangement.
In Rosa Lucida, that approach produces an unusually poised encounter with the plant. The flower is isolated from garden, vase and anecdote, yet it does not feel detached from life. Bud, blossom, foliage, thorn and fruit remain visibly connected, presenting the rose as both a carefully observed specimen and a complete, changing organism.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
