| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |
Mapas enmarcados

Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Indica Fragrans, dated 1817, presents the rose as both botanical specimen and carefully composed portrait. A fully opened pink bloom occupies the lower right of the sheet, its layered petals shifting from pale blush at the edges to fuller, deeper colour towards the centre. Above it, two closed buds introduce earlier stages of flowering, while a leafy branch extends across the left side. The asymmetry gives the plant a natural, gently ascending rhythm, held in balance by the generous pale ground.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century, a period in which the close observation and classification of plants increasingly met a cultivated taste for floral beauty. Working in Paris and enjoying the patronage of figures including Marie Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, he became particularly associated with roses, lilies and other garden flowers. His illustrations helped establish a visual language in which scientific clarity did not require aesthetic austerity: individual structures remain legible, yet each specimen is arranged with the poise of a formal study.
A closer look
The open rose provides the composition’s centre of gravity. Its petals overlap in dense, irregular tiers, their edges curling and folding around a shadowed centre. Rather than describing the flower with a hard outline, the modelling depends upon fine tonal transitions: soft highlights suggest the convex surfaces of the petals, while touches of deeper pink separate one layer from the next. The effect is substantial without becoming heavy, preserving the bloom’s delicacy even at its fullest.
The surrounding foliage offers a more graphic counterpoint. Serrated leaves spread from the stem in alternating directions, their rich greens enlivened by fine vein structures and subtle shifts between light and shade. Some leaves turn towards the light; others overlap or recede, creating depth within an otherwise spare arrangement. Small thorns visible along the stem introduce a pointed, sharply observed detail against the softness of the flower. The two buds above are paler and more tightly contained, making the plate a compact study of development as well as a presentation of a single blossom.
Negative space is essential to the design. The warm cream background isolates every contour, from the finest leaf tip to the slight bend of the stem, and prevents the abundance of petals from overwhelming the page. At the foot of the composition, the inscriptions “Rosa Indica Fragrans” and “Rosier des Indes odorant” identify the specimen in elegant script, linking the image’s decorative refinement to its classificatory purpose.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at the meeting point of late Enlightenment botany and early Romantic sensibility. Botanical images were expected to convey useful information, but they also circulated within a culture fascinated by gardens, cultivation and the expanding variety of plants available for study. His flower studies answered both interests. Leaves, buds, stems and thorns are recorded with precision, while the specimen is edited into a harmonious composition rather than crowded by extraneous setting.
Rosa Indica Fragrans is especially characteristic of that balance. The rose is neither reduced to a diagram nor submerged in ornament. Instead, its botanical particularities become the source of the image’s elegance: the graduated opening of the buds, the branching foliage, the fine serrations and veins, and the subtle progression of pink through the central bloom.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
