Seguir leyendoSaint–Raphaël Tonic, Fortifying Wine, issued in 1914 by Imp. F. Champenois, places an imposing bottle at the centre of a tightly orchestrated commercial design. Deep red, vivid green and warm cream are arranged in emphatic blocks, while grape clusters, vine leaves and insistent lettering surround the product with a sense of abundance. The result is both direct and decorative: the bottle can be recognised at a glance, yet the eye is rewarded by ornamental borders, shifts of type and finely worked label details.
This colour lithograph belongs to a period in which advertising posters had become a significant form of public visual culture. Made at the threshold between the Belle Époque and the First World War, it uses the established language of beverage promotion to associate Saint-Raphaël with health, appetite and refinement. Claims such as “TONIC”, “FORTIFYING” and “DIGESTIVE” reflect an era when wines and spirits were frequently marketed through the vocabulary of wellbeing as readily as through taste or conviviality. Here, commercial persuasion is condensed into a memorable union of typography, colour and emblematic imagery.
A closer look
The bottle dominates the vertical composition, rising like an architectural column through the middle of the poster. Its dark glass is modelled with restrained highlights that give the otherwise flat design a suggestion of curvature and sheen. Against it, the pale label becomes a small picture within the picture: script and printed lettering are enclosed by ornamental flourishes, with additional decoration gathering around the neck. This concentration of detail makes the bottle appear substantial and authoritative without compromising the poster’s immediate legibility.
Across the upper section, “SAINT RAPHAEL” appears in large green serif capitals, their weight balanced by the broad red areas behind and around them. The central wording is similarly forceful, promoting the wine as “TONIC FORTIFYING DIGESTIVE AND EXCELLENT FLAVOUR”. Rather than treating text as an explanation placed beneath an illustration, the designer makes lettering part of the composition itself. Different scales establish a clear sequence: brand name first, bottle second, product claims and price information after.
Grapes and serrated vine leaves fill the upper corners and continue through the decorative framework, softening the geometry of the type with curling organic forms. Red and green carry the agricultural associations of the product while also producing a strong complementary contrast. Warm beige passages offer moments of visual rest, and the white bottle label provides the sharpest point of clarity. At the lower left, the prices—“$17.50 PER CASE” and “$1.50 PER BOTTLE”—bring the imagery back to its practical commercial purpose. A thin dark border contains the crowded arrangement and gives its many competing elements a disciplined edge.
Context and significance
Early twentieth-century poster advertising depended upon rapid recognition in busy public settings. This design answers that challenge through symmetry, saturated colour and a hierarchy that remains intelligible despite the density of information. The abundance of lettering is not merely functional: variations in scale, serif form and decorative script give the words much of the animation that a figure or narrative scene might provide elsewhere.
The poster is particularly revealing in the way it turns a bottled drink into a compound promise of flavour, strength and sophistication. Its lavish vine ornament speaks of cultivation and natural origin, while the monumental central bottle suggests consistency and recognisable branding. That combination of factual sales information and highly controlled visual theatre makes Saint–Raphaël Tonic, Fortifying Wine an engaging document of commercial graphic art in 1914.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
