Seguir leyendoAugust Macke’s Satirical figure on the Blue Rider, made in 1913, is a densely animated encounter between caricature and abstraction. A hatted figure occupies the centre, yet refuses to settle into a conventional portrait: face, body and surroundings are caught within a restless web of looping contours, bright colour patches and overlapping forms. Warm reds and oranges press against cooler blues and greens, while darker passages give the composition its emphatic, almost theatrical rhythm.
The title places the work in witty dialogue with Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based avant-garde circle with which Macke was closely associated. Rather than a unified school, the Blue Rider brought together artists exploring alternatives to naturalistic representation, particularly through liberated colour and simplified form. Macke developed a distinctive position within this milieu. His work often retained the recognisable world—figures, clothing, gardens and modern urban life—even as colour became increasingly independent of ordinary appearance. Here, satire adds another dimension: the movement’s celebrated name becomes material for playful self-examination.
A closer look
The central figure emerges through economical, fluid marks. A broad hat establishes the head with immediate clarity, while the lightly indicated expression remains deliberately elusive. Darker lines describe the figure without sealing it off; instead, they loosen and thread into the surrounding field. Red contours seem to weave through adjacent forms, producing a tapestry-like surface in which character and setting are continually entangled.
At the lower right, a second seated figure appears in paler tones against a deeper background, possibly holding an object. This quieter presence counterbalances the more emphatic central character, though neither is isolated as a single focal point. Macke distributes attention across the whole vertical composition: circular motifs gather in the lower third, while small dotted and sun-like forms enliven the upper edge. In the upper left, broad dark shapes meet sudden bursts of brighter colour, adding weight without bringing the movement to a halt.
Colour provides much of the internal structure. Saturated reds act as visual pathways, carrying the eye between figures and abstract passages; blue and green areas in the upper sections recede more softly, creating a loose impression of depth. Yellow and orange accents punctuate the cooler zones. Wash-like areas allow colours to flow towards one another, while the sketchier contours preserve spontaneity. The result is neither fully figurative nor wholly abstract, but a layered pictorial puzzle in which forms repeatedly appear, dissolve and re-form.
Context and significance
Created at a particularly fertile moment in German Expressionism, the work belongs to a period when artists were testing how far colour and line might depart from descriptive duties. Der Blaue Reiter, associated above all with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc as well as Macke, encouraged a broad and experimental understanding of modern art. Its artists did not share a single visual language; what connected them was an openness to intensified colour, unconventional structure and art beyond established academic hierarchies.
Macke’s contribution was notably sensuous and humane, frequently balancing avant-garde experiment with the pleasures and absurdities of visible life. Satirical figure on the Blue Rider sharpens that balance into affectionate irreverence. Its figures remain legible, but they are swept into a field of chromatic movement that gently undermines solemnity. Made only a year before Macke’s death in 1914, it captures the assurance and curiosity of his mature work: buoyant, self-aware and visually alive to the unstable boundary between observation and invention.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
