vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-herman-dohm-1879
Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Herman Dohm, 1879

Herman Dohm’s Bock! bock! bock!, created in 1879, turns a beverage subject into an elaborate visual joke. A bow-tied goat leans into the composition from the left, its alert, faintly mischievous expression matched by an overflowing mug of beer on the right. Above them hangs a decorated bell, while the title’s repeated cry curves through the scene in emphatic lettering. The result is part advertisement, part comic illustration: richly worked, immediately legible and full of incident.

The central conceit depends upon the double meaning of “bock”, a term for a style of beer and the German word for a male goat. Goat imagery consequently became closely associated with bock beer, offering commercial artists an instantly recognisable motif with considerable comic potential. Dohm, an American artist active across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, developed the theme within the lively culture of late nineteenth-century American printmaking, when illustrated advertisements frequently borrowed the narrative detail, humour and decorative ambition of popular prints.

A closer look

The goat’s head anchors the left half of the vertical design. Dense, fluctuating lines build the texture of its dark fur, while sharply described eyes and muzzle give the animal an unusually animated presence. Its bow tie introduces a mock-formal note: the folds are carefully delineated, yet the incongruity of such smart attire on a goat keeps the tone cheerfully absurd. Rather than serving as a simple emblem, the animal behaves almost like a comic character presiding over the drink beside it.

Across the composition, the beer mug provides a solid visual counterweight. Its dark body is modelled with stippling and close-set marks, set against a crown of pale foam that spills generously over the rim. Rich browns, black accents and warm cream create a restrained but forceful palette; deep shadows in the fur and vessel make the lighter froth especially prominent. Overlapping forms establish surprising depth, with the goat and mug pushed forward while the stone arch and suspended bell appear to recede behind them.

Smaller details reward a slower reading. The bell is ornamented with intricate surface decoration, and a tiny bird in flight adds movement near the upper part of the design. Subtle motifs around the edges frame the central action without suppressing its boisterousness. Typography is equally active: “BOCK! BOCK! BOCK!” follows the architecture beneath the bell, while a larger “BOCK” at the lower right reiterates the message. The words function simultaneously as a product name, a goat-like call and a rhythmic refrain.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century beverage imagery often had to attract attention in visually crowded settings, and Dohm’s design achieves this through character rather than sober description. The asymmetrical arrangement guides the eye from the goat’s expressive face to the foaming mug, then upwards through the bell and decorative lettering. Fine illustrative detail gives the poster something of the absorbing quality of a story-page, while the bold repetition ensures that its subject can be grasped at once.

What makes Bock! bock! bock! particularly memorable is the ease with which language, animal caricature and drink culture are folded together. Its humour remains direct, but the elaborate linework and carefully staged contrasts reveal a design conceived for sustained looking as well as instant recognition.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
