berliner-kindl-vintage-pilsner-beer-poster-by-georg-rader-1910
Berliner Kindl Vintage Pilsner Beer Poster by Georg Räder, 1910

Georg Räder’s Berliner Kindl Pilsner Art Vereinsbrauerei Rixdorf, created in 1910, builds an entire beer advertisement around one memorable encounter: a bright-haired child peering over the rim of an enormous grey stein. The figure’s wide eyes and mischievous smile emerge against a deep green ground, while the vessel’s exaggerated scale and sweeping handle give the composition the directness of a sign. Beneath it, the broad lettering of “Berliner Kindl” anchors the poster with a name designed to be recognised at a glance.

Produced for a Berlin-area brewery during the final years of Imperial Germany, Räder’s design belongs to a period in which commercial posters were becoming an increasingly sophisticated part of urban life. Breweries competing for attention needed more than product information: they required an identity that could register quickly in the street, the café or the public house. Here, the child and stein form a compact visual emblem, linking the brand’s name to a distinctive character rather than relying on a detailed scene or lengthy claim.

A closer look

The poster is organised with striking economy. Almost everything is concentrated along its central axis: yellow hair, pale face and light grey mug are stacked against the dark green field, creating an immediate tonal hierarchy. The background contains little spatial depth, so the child appears to hover just behind the vessel’s rim. Subtle highlights across the mug prevent its broad surface from becoming entirely flat, while the oversized handle introduces a generous curve into an otherwise firmly upright composition.

Small details soften the forceful geometry. The child’s hair is articulated in several shades of yellow rather than a single block, and the expression is animated by enlarged eyes and a friendly, slightly conspiratorial smile. In the upper left, a circular arrangement of stylised hops supplies a botanical reference to brewing. Its clustered leaves and cones offer an organic counterpoint to the smooth stein and clean-edged lettering.

Typography carries much of the lower section. “Berliner Kindl” appears in wide, emphatic letterforms, while “Pilsner Art Vereinsbrauerei Rixdorf” is set more simply beneath it, separating brand recognition from practical description. This hierarchy allows the name to command attention first and the brewery information to follow. Near the upper edge, the discreet “G. Räder” inscription acknowledges the designer without disturbing the central motif.

Context and significance

The reference to Rixdorf places the poster within a particularly specific moment in Berlin’s development. Rixdorf, by then incorporated into Greater Berlin’s expanding urban world, was renamed Neukölln in 1912—only two years after Räder’s design. The wording therefore preserves a local identity that would shortly disappear from official use, even as the brewery’s advertising addressed the growing consumer culture of the metropolis.

Visually, the poster demonstrates why simplified commercial design proved so effective in the early twentieth century. Flat colour, crisp contours and minimal depth make the subject legible from a distance, yet the image is not impersonal: the child’s expression, the rounded stein and the sprig-like hops give it humour and specificity. Räder’s achievement lies in that balance between information and character. The advertisement names a beer, identifies its brewery and establishes a recognisable personality through a handful of carefully controlled forms.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
