Published in 1898 by Imp. F. Champenois, Bières de la Meuse. Brasserie à Sèvres (S. & O.) & Bar-le-Duc (Meuse) turns an encounter between a mounted gentleman and a smartly dressed server into a lively advertisement for a regional French beer. The rider raises a branded stein while the woman, poised beside the horse with a tray, commands attention in a brilliant red dress with puffed sleeves. Above them, the name “BIÈRES DE LA MEUSE” stretches across the poster in emphatic red capitals, making the brand part of the spectacle rather than a mere caption.

The poster belongs to the flourishing commercial visual culture of fin-de-siècle France, when lithographic printing allowed advertisers to combine expansive colour, bold lettering and elaborate illustration on a public scale. Such designs did more than announce where a product could be bought: they gave breweries, cafés and consumer goods distinctive personalities. Here, beer is associated with sociability, stylish dress and an almost theatrical display of service. The locations named in the title—Sèvres and Bar-le-Duc—ground this polished promotional scene in the brewery’s regional identity.

A closer look

The composition is organised around the broad, muscular form of the horse, whose curved neck and carefully articulated harness lead the eye towards the stein in the rider’s hand. Saddle and bridle are picked out with close attention, while the gentleman’s formal bow tie and patterned waistcoat add touches of fashionable refinement. His dark clothing also serves a graphic purpose, providing a strong counterweight to the woman’s saturated red costume and the creamier tones elsewhere in the design.

The server stands slightly to the left, her upright posture and balanced tray giving the exchange a controlled, presentational quality. Her curled hairstyle and voluminous sleeves sharpen the period character of the scene. Red moves rhythmically through the poster—from her dress to the brewery name above—while smaller passages of green, yellow and blue enliven the otherwise restrained combination of black and warm cream. Flat areas of colour sit beside graduated shading, especially across the figures and horse, creating volume without sacrificing the immediacy required of street advertising.

Behind the principal group, trees and a building are kept comparatively subdued, suggesting a setting while leaving the foreground action clear. A decorative sign at the upper right introduces another branded flourish, its flowing lines contrasting with the heavier typography. At the lower right, smaller lettering identifies the breweries at Sèvres and Bar-le-Duc. This descending hierarchy—from the enormous brand name, through the animated central scene, to the practical location details—shows how carefully the poster controls the viewer’s attention.

Context and significance

Imp. F. Champenois was responsible for printing the poster at a moment when French commercial lithography had become a particularly ambitious form of urban image-making. Posters competed in busy public spaces, so clarity at a distance mattered: large type, concentrated colour and an immediately legible human drama were practical as well as aesthetic choices. The dense but orderly arrangement of Bières de la Meuse demonstrates that balance, combining promotional information with the finish and narrative appeal of an illustrated scene.

Its enduring interest lies in the way commerce is transformed into performance. The beer stein is relatively small, yet pose, gesture, costume and typography all direct attention towards it. Horse, rider and server create movement and social exchange; the repeated red establishes instant recognition; and the quieter background prevents the scene from becoming confused. The result is both an advertisement and a vivid document of Belle Époque graphic culture, when a brewery’s public identity could be constructed through wit, colour and visual theatre.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
