Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s Bosnie-Herzegovine; L’exposition Universelle, Paris (1900) places a young woman in traditional dress at the centre of an exceptionally dense ornamental scheme. Holding a decorated plate before her, she appears both as an individual figure and as an emblematic presentation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Warm beige, russet brown and dusky pink are threaded with deep green foliage, while flowers, embroidery and patterned borders make almost every part of the composition visually active. Above, the name “BOSNIE-HERZEGOVINE” is absorbed into the design rather than treated as a separate caption.
Created for the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, the poster belongs to an event conceived on a vast scale as a showcase for international culture, industry and technological progress. Mucha, the Czech artist whose theatrical posters and decorative panels had become closely associated with fin-de-siècle Paris, was also involved in the presentation of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the exposition. At the time, the territory was administered by Austria-Hungary, and its representation at the fair was shaped by the political as well as promotional language of empire. Mucha’s design therefore occupies an intriguing space between cultural portrait, exhibition souvenir and the sumptuous visual spectacle expected of the Belle Époque poster.
A closer look
The figure forms a strong vertical axis through the composition. Her pale face and head covering emerge from the darker, more intricate field around them, with soft shading lending her features a degree of volume that contrasts with the flatter decorative passages. The plate she carries echoes the surrounding ornament: its patterned surface joins garment, object and background into a continuous display of craftsmanship. Fine embroidery-like marks across her clothing reward close attention without disturbing the clarity of her silhouette.
Around the lower half, stylised roses and curling green leaves create a broad floral frame. These are not merely botanical embellishments; their spiralling stems guide the eye inward and upward, repeatedly returning attention to the central figure. Pink blossoms soften the earthier browns, while the green foliage supplies the strongest chromatic contrast. Behind and beside her, geometric and floral patterns overlap in shallow layers, producing richness without relying on conventional perspectival depth.
Typography is integral to this decorative architecture. The upper lettering is bold and ceremonious, balanced at the foot by the words “SOUVENIR DE L’EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE PARIS 1900”. The shift from imposing title to more elegant lower script establishes a clear graphic hierarchy: place first, event second. Mucha’s name appears discreetly at the lower right. Curved borders and repeated motifs gather text and figure into a single enclosed design, so that even the informational elements contribute to its rhythm.
Context and significance
Mucha’s work helped define the popular visual language now commonly called le style Mucha: elongated figures, emphatic contour, abundant plant forms and lettering conceived as part of the composition. Yet this poster is more than a familiar example of his decorative manner. Its traditional costume, ornamented vessel and carefully staged cultural identity connect his Parisian Art Nouveau vocabulary to the representational ambitions of an international exposition. The result reflects how nations and regions were presented to metropolitan audiences through selective combinations of dress, craft and ornament.
There is also a revealing tension between the poised central woman and the almost inexhaustible detail surrounding her. From a distance, the design reads immediately as a commanding figure framed by flowers and title lettering; at closer range, it becomes an intricate network of textile pattern, foliage, script and border. That balance between instant graphic impact and sustained decorative looking is among the qualities that made Mucha such an accomplished designer for the public culture of turn-of-the-century Paris.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x14in (90x35cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
