Slender green stems rise through the pale ground in gentle curves, carrying elongated leaves and a small concentration of purple-blue flowers. The plant is isolated from any suggestion of habitat, allowing its branching structure, vivid petals and minute yellow anthers to command attention.
Redouté worked during a remarkable period for botanical illustration, when close scientific observation was increasingly joined to refined pictorial composition. Celebrated for his floral studies, the French painter transformed individual specimens into images that could serve both botanical study and aesthetic appreciation. Here, accuracy does not result in rigidity: the plant retains the irregular rhythms of natural growth, while its placement within generous negative space gives the study clarity and grace. The work reflects the early nineteenth century’s sustained interest in classification and the careful recording of the natural world.
A closer look
The composition develops vertically from a narrow lower stem, opening gradually as leaves and flowering branches extend to either side. One leaf reaches towards the upper left, while the principal stem bends softly upwards on the right. This asymmetry prevents the specimen from appearing diagrammatic. Instead, the eye follows a sequence of fine directional movements—up the stem, along the tapering foliage and finally towards the strongest concentration of colour near the upper centre.
Against the warm off-white ground, the greens are varied rather than uniform. Soft olive and fresh leaf tones are deepened by fine linear shading, particularly around the veins and where leaves overlap the stem. The flowers provide a compact counterpoint: clear violet-purple petals surround sharply articulated yellow stamens, their concentrated colour made more intense by the surrounding emptiness. Subtle highlights and tonal shifts give the leaves a slight sheen without sacrificing the clean, descriptive character of the plate.
Smaller botanical details occupy the lower part of the composition. A separated floral element appears towards the left, while a secondary bud or flower study balances it on the right. These fragments encourage a different kind of looking from the principal specimen above: they move from the plant’s overall habit to the construction of its individual parts. Beneath them, the labels “Commelina Erecta.” and “Commelina Droit.” identify the subject in botanical and French forms. The lettering is restrained, leaving the specimen itself visually dominant.
Context and significance
Redouté’s achievement lies in the ease with which descriptive precision and decorative judgement coexist. His plants are recognisable specimens, but they are also carefully orchestrated arrangements of line, interval and colour. In Commelina Erecta, the ample untouched ground is especially important: it separates each leaf and branching stem while preserving the impression of a living plant rather than a compressed inventory of features.
The illustration belongs to a culture in which botanical knowledge circulated through images as well as written description. Before photography, such studies depended upon an artist’s ability to select, clarify and record—the curve of a stem, the attachment of a leaf, the structure of a bloom—without losing the character of the specimen. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
