A thorned stem rises diagonally across the pale ground, branching into open flowers, tightly furled buds and layered clusters of serrated leaves. The blossoms are almost white, with the faintest blush in their shaded folds; their warm yellow centres form small points of colour amid the stronger, more varied greens of the foliage.
Redouté was among the most celebrated flower illustrators of the early nineteenth century, admired for bringing botanical scrutiny and decorative refinement into unusually close accord. His plant portraits answered a period appetite for the observation, classification and cultivation of the natural world, yet they were never merely diagrams. Here, the rose is made legible as a botanical subject while retaining the irregularity of living growth: stems turn, leaves overlap and flowers appear at different stages of opening.
A closer look
The composition is carefully balanced without becoming rigidly symmetrical. Near the upper left, a fully opened bloom spreads its five petals towards the light, each petal gently modelled by fine tonal shifts and slender veins. Other flowers turn at slightly different angles, preventing the spray from reading as a repeated pattern. Their centres are minutely articulated, with soft stippling around the bases of the petals easing the transition from creamy white to muted yellow.
Below and to the right, the foliage becomes denser and darker. Individual leaves vary in size, angle and shade, while their sharply defined edges and branching veins give the lower part of the study a crisp, textured weight. These greens range from fresh, luminous tones to deeper olive shadows where one leaf passes over another. The contrast between the substantial leaves and the almost translucent flowers helps the blossoms appear particularly light.
Several quieter details reward close attention. Closed buds along the central stem record another stage in the plant’s development, their compact forms set against the expansive open corollas. Small thorns punctuate the stem, an anatomically informative feature that also introduces a terse, angular counterpoint to the rounded petals. At the lower centre, the inscription reads “Rosa Rubiginosa Vaillantiana. L’Eglantine de Vaillant.” The spacious off-white ground isolates every contour, allowing the plant’s structure to be followed from stem to leaf, bud and flower.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
