e-tosetti-brewing-co-vintage-lager-beer-poster-1894
E. Tosetti Brewing Co. Vintage Lager Beer Poster, 1894

E. Tosetti’s Brewing Co’s Celebrated Champagne and Bohemian Export and Lager Beers, an anonymous advertising lithograph of 1894, turns a brewery promotion into a spirited theatrical tableau. Perched upon a dark column, a woman in a pale blue costume raises a slender glass with practised elegance. Deep red accents, floral ornaments and flashes of yellow animate the otherwise lightly tinted ground, while the emphatic lettering below transforms her toast into a commercial proclamation.

The poster belongs to the flourishing print culture of the late nineteenth century, when breweries used colour lithography and decorative typography to establish distinctive identities in an increasingly competitive market. Its language is carefully aspirational: “champagne” evokes refinement, while “Bohemian export” lends the beer a fashionable European association. Yet the company’s location is stated plainly beneath the principal wording—“Chicago, U.S.A.”—uniting cosmopolitan suggestion with a clear local identity.

A closer look

The figure is placed slightly away from the composition’s centre, giving her pose an engaging sense of movement. One arm lifts the glass into the open space at the upper right, while the turn of her body and the sweep of her costume carry the eye back towards the lettering. Her pastel blue dress is enlivened by intricate patterning and strong red passages, creating a vivid contrast with the warm beige background. Flowers woven into her hair introduce smaller notes of green and white, extending the festive character into the finest details of her appearance.

The black column is an especially effective graphic device. Its dense, upright form anchors the lightly poised figure and separates her colourful costume from the paler field behind. The arrangement also gives her something of the presence of a stage performer or emblematic mascot: elevated, isolated and immediately legible from a distance. Frontal illumination keeps the contours crisp, picking out the rim and stem of the glass and defining the folds and ornament of the clothing without complicating the poster’s direct visual message.

At the lower edge, ornate type gives “E. Tosetti Brewing Co.” substantial visual weight. The company name is not merely a caption but part of the composition, its decorative forms echoing the flourish of the costume above. A hierarchy emerges between figure, promotional wording and place-name, allowing the eye to register celebration first and commercial information second. This balance between illustration and typography is central to the poster’s effectiveness.

Context and significance

Brewing advertisements of this period often sold more than the drink itself: they constructed an atmosphere of sociability, abundance and cultivated pleasure. Here, the raised glass communicates the message almost instantaneously, while the fashionable costume and ornamental lettering elevate an everyday commodity through associations with festivity and refinement. The anonymous designer’s achievement lies in making these associations readable without overcrowding the page.

The result is both advertisement and period graphic design—a compact example of how late nineteenth-century commercial imagery combined vivid colour, an appealing human figure and assertive lettering. Its enduring interest lies in that carefully judged contrast: a light, playful toast held firmly in place by the dark pedestal and the typographic authority of the brewery’s name.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
