edouard-besserat-vintage-champagne-poster-by-gaston-marechaux-1925
Édouard Besserat Vintage Champagne Poster by Gaston Marechaux, 1925

Gaston Marechaux’s Champagne Edouard Besserat, issued in 1925, turns an encounter between two theatrical figures into a vivid advertisement for celebration. At the left, a darkly dressed man presents the labelled bottle with practised assurance; opposite him, an elegant woman in a sweeping pink gown raises one arm as though caught mid-dance or toast. Their animated exchange is staged against a rich red ground, where curling lines and decorative flourishes give the composition something of champagne’s own effervescence.

Created by a French artist working across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the poster belongs to a period in which commercial design drew freely upon the glamour of fashion, theatre and nightlife. Luxury goods were promoted through memorable characters and carefully orchestrated lettering as much as through the products themselves. Here, Besserat champagne becomes the catalyst for a complete social scene: stylish dress, performance and poised gesture combine to associate the name with sophistication and festivity.

A closer look

The design is built around a strong diagonal movement between the two figures. The man leans into the composition from the centre-left, directing attention towards the bottle marked “EDOUARD BESSERAT”. Its reflective highlights and upright silhouette make it an emphatic visual hinge. From there, the eye moves across to the woman’s raised hand and dramatic headdress, then descends through the broad, flowing forms of her dress. The overlap of the figures gives their exchange immediacy, while their contrasting costumes keep each silhouette distinct.

Colour performs much of the poster’s persuasive work. Warm pink fabric stands brightly against the saturated red background, while black clothing and shadowed passages provide sharp graphic punctuation. The woman’s gown is not treated as a single flat shape: varied marks around the skirt suggest folds, volume and the flutter of movement. A decorative sash sweeps along her arm, and the pink plume in her hair adds a further flourish above the figures. Beneath her foot, a small area of shadow quietly anchors an otherwise airborne pose.

Typography crowns the scene. The word “CHAMPAGNE”, set in bold serif capitals, establishes the product category immediately, while “EDOUARD BESSERAT” gives the brand almost equal prominence below. The clarity of this hierarchy is characteristic of effective poster design: text can be read quickly, yet it remains integrated with the spectacle beneath it. Around the characters, faint swirls and scalloped accents soften the geometry of the lettering and sustain the impression of bubbles, music and motion without requiring a detailed setting.

Context and significance

By the 1920s, the advertising poster had become a particularly visible meeting point between commercial communication and modern graphic art. Designers needed to arrest attention at a distance, compress a message into a few decisive forms and make a name linger in the memory. Marechaux answers those demands through a restricted but forceful palette, enlarged figures and an immediately legible brand identity. The result sells less through explanation than through atmosphere: rather than cataloguing the qualities of the drink, it presents champagne as part of a polished, performative occasion.

What gives Champagne Edouard Besserat its enduring visual character is this balance between theatrical exuberance and disciplined design. Every plume, fold and curling line contributes to the sense of festivity, yet the bottle and name remain unmistakably central. It is both a lively document of 1920s beverage advertising and a deft example of how fashion, gesture and typography could be made to serve a single memorable idea.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
