F. Ginsto’s Elixir du Japon, created in 1905, turns a beverage advertisement into a scene of maritime peril. A vessel pitches amid blue-green waves at the upper left, its red hull and flames cutting sharply through the darker sea, while three sailors gather in the foreground. One raises a lantern above the spray, creating a conspicuous point of light and urgency. Around this turbulent narrative, an elaborate black-and-gold border and emphatic lettering impose the order of a carefully constructed commercial design.

Ginsto was a Belgian artist active around the turn of the twentieth century, when posters and packaging had become increasingly sophisticated instruments of consumer culture. Drinks, patent medicines and restorative preparations were often promoted through memorable names and theatrical imagery rather than sober description. Here the idea of a Japanese elixir is presented through decorative exoticism and high drama: the poster promises a distinctive identity for the product long before it explains anything about it. Its fusion of illustration, ornament and typography belongs to a period in which the boundary between advertising and decorative art was particularly fertile.

A closer look

The central scene unfolds diagonally. The distressed ship occupies the upper left, while the sailors at lower right pull the eye down and across the composition. Their gestures and concentrated expressions lend the foreground an almost narrative immediacy. Behind them, repeated curls and ridges of water turn the sea into a dense pattern of movement; pale highlights flicker across darker blue and green passages, while the ship’s warm reds and orange flames provide the strongest chromatic counterpoint.

Depth is built through a succession of distinct layers. The sailors appear closest, the capsizing vessel commands the middle distance, and several much smaller ships punctuate the horizon. Tiny flags and masts become useful measures of scale, making the foreground waves seem still more forceful. The sky lightens above the action and grows warmer near the horizon, an understated tonal transition that prevents the crowded scene from becoming visually sealed in.

The surrounding ornament is not merely an edge but an active part of the design. Rich black bands, gold detailing and densely worked floral and fanciful motifs contain the restless sea like a decorative frame within the poster itself. At lower left, a woman in traditional Japanese attire appears beside the branding, linking the advertised name to an immediately legible visual cue. Across the lower section, the words “ELIXIR du JAPON” dominate in stylised lettering, accompanied by “BRIAS & CO., BRUXELLES”. Changes of scale and character within the typography establish a clear hierarchy: product first, commercial identity second.

Context and significance

The poster emerged during a period when European graphic design frequently drew upon an imaginative idea of Japan. Interest in Japanese art had already reshaped Western approaches to contour, cropping, pattern and decorative surface, while commercial imagery often adapted such associations more loosely to suggest novelty and distinction. Elixir du Japon combines those decorative references with an emphatically European taste for illustrated adventure, producing a hybrid rather than an attempt at documentary authenticity.

What makes Ginsto’s design especially engaging is the contrast between danger and control. Within the picture, waves, fire and human gestures generate instability; around it, the border, lettering and carefully divided lower register restore graphic order. The result is both a compact maritime drama and a revealing example of how early twentieth-century advertising used spectacle, ornament and cultural association to make a commercial name difficult to forget.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
