Pierre-Joseph Redouté gives the plant an almost architectural clarity: a slender central stem rises through successive tiers of narrow green foliage before culminating in a cluster of luminous yellow flowers. Set against an unbroken pale ground, the specimen appears at once scientifically isolated and gracefully poised, its elongated form emphasised by the generous space surrounding it.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, renowned for reconciling close natural observation with unusually refined composition and colour. This plate belongs to the cultivated world evoked by Malmaison and Navarre, residences associated with the Empress Joséphine and with an elite horticultural culture in which rare plants were collected, studied and displayed. In publications of this kind, botanical illustration served more than a decorative purpose: it made unfamiliar specimens available for sustained examination, preserving distinctions of growth, foliage and flower that written description alone could not convey.
A closer look
The composition begins quietly near the lower edge, where fine, needle-like leaves gather around the stem in dark and mid greens. Rather than forming a dense, symmetrical mass, the foliage projects at different angles, creating small intervals of pale background between individual sprays. These openings keep the lower section light and legible while allowing the eye to follow the plant’s upward movement.
Higher on the stem, the yellow flowers provide the principal concentration of colour. Their forms are built from subtle variations of lemon, ochre and warmer golden tones, with delicate shading around their bases lending them dimension. The blossoms overlap sufficiently to suggest the density of a living cluster, yet each remains distinct. Fine contours articulate the petal edges, while the restrained tonal modelling avoids obscuring the plant’s structure.
Redouté’s control of negative space is particularly effective. The plant occupies only a narrow vertical band through the centre of the plate, making its height feel more pronounced and its silhouette easier to read. At the lower centre, the botanical name anchors the otherwise floating specimen; the plate number “44” appears discreetly in the upper right. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
