One fully opened flower dominates the composition, its crowded pink petals turning around a small glimpse of yellow at the centre. Above it, two tightly closed crimson buds rise on slender stems, while serrated leaves spread below in an asymmetrical arrangement that retains the irregularity of a living plant.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower painters of the early nineteenth century, renowned for combining close botanical observation with an unusually refined sense of composition. His rose studies belong to a culture in which botany was both a developing field of knowledge and a cultivated visual pleasure. Produced during the period of his celebrated rose publications of 1817–24, this study exemplifies the delicacy associated with engraved and hand-coloured botanical plates: precise enough to describe the specimen, but arranged with the balance and grace of an independent work of art.
A closer look
The open bloom is built from successive rings of petals rather than presented as a flat disc. Pale blush pinks along the outer edges deepen towards the folded interior, where fine lines and minute tonal changes articulate each overlap. The contours are never mechanically uniform: some petals curl inward, others flare gently outwards, and several have softly notched margins. These small variations give the rose its convincing fullness and suggest the complex structure concealed within its apparently simple outline.
The two buds in the upper right provide a compact counterpoint to the expanded flower. Their deep red petals are enclosed by pointed green sepals, establishing a visual sequence from closed bud to mature blossom. A narrow, thorned stem connects these different stages, shifting from muted green to earthy brown. The thorns are sharply described but never overemphasised, while tiny hairs, leaf veins and toothed edges reveal how attentively Redouté observed the less glamorous parts of the plant.
Much of the study’s elegance comes from its use of open space. The stems branch lightly across the pale ground, and the foliage is concentrated around the lower half rather than forming a dense botanical mass. Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
