Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Tropaeolum majus (Garden Nasturtium), created in 1827, gives the familiar garden flower an unusually poised and spacious presentation. Rounded green leaves, slender curving stems and red-orange blossoms are arranged vertically against a pale ground, with ample space between each element. The plant appears neither rigidly diagrammatic nor casually gathered: its trailing habit is shaped into a graceful, slightly asymmetric composition, balancing botanical clarity with decorative rhythm.
Redouté helped define botanical illustration in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, bringing scientific observation together with an exceptional sensitivity to colour and form. His flower studies belonged to a culture increasingly concerned with recording, classifying and disseminating knowledge of the natural world, yet their appeal was never merely instructional. In this plate, the garden nasturtium becomes both specimen and portrait, described precisely enough to be studied while retaining the freshness and irregularity of a living plant.
A closer look
The blossoms provide the strongest accents. Their petals move from deep, warm red at the edges towards softer orange and yellow around the centres, where the stamens are picked out with minute precision. Gentle highlights give the petals a supple, faintly luminous quality, while restrained shadows establish their overlapping forms. The flowers face in subtly different directions, preventing the composition from settling into symmetry and allowing the eye to follow the plant’s natural changes of angle.
Around them, the leaves create a cooler counterpoint. Their bright greens vary in intensity, and fine radiating veins articulate each rounded surface. Some leaf edges appear slightly turned or curled through delicate tonal shading, lending depth without introducing heavy contrast. In the upper left, several leaves spread out like shallow discs; lower down, stems bend and cross, leading towards a small unopened green bud at the lower right. This inclusion of several stages of growth gives the plate an instructive completeness while enriching its visual tempo.
The near-empty background is essential to the effect. With no surrounding garden or habitat, every junction of stem and leaf remains legible, and the plant’s silhouette acquires almost calligraphic elegance. At the foot of the plate, the inscriptions identify the subject as “Tropaeolum majus var.” and “Capucine mordoré”, with Redouté’s name placed centrally below. These restrained labels preserve the character of a botanical record without disturbing the airy arrangement above.
Context and significance
Redouté is especially associated with flower painting of extraordinary refinement. Working within the French tradition of botanical art, he treated plants as objects of close inquiry but also as subjects worthy of the compositional care usually accorded to portraiture. His characteristic achievement lies in this reconciliation: contour, veining and growth habit remain intelligible, yet the specimen is never reduced to a dry inventory of parts.
The garden nasturtium is particularly well suited to that approach. Its circular leaves establish a sequence of cool green planes, while its blossoms punctuate the design with concentrated warmth. Redouté’s careful gradations soften the contrast, producing an image that is vivid without becoming strident. The result preserves the dual character of the finest botanical illustration: a precise account of a plant and a quietly sophisticated study in line, colour and balance.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
