Published in 1985 from 1980 cartographic work, the United States Geological Survey’s “Holly Ridge” presents a richly detailed portrait of the North Carolina coast around Surf City, Topsail Sound, and the mainland communities beyond. At the 1:24,000 scale, the map belongs to the USGS’s celebrated series of quadrangles, designed to record the American landscape with exceptional precision. Here, the meeting of barrier island, tidal sound, inland waterways, roads, and low coastal terrain is rendered with the clarity that made USGS mapping indispensable to engineers, planners, naturalists, and travelers. The map captures Surf City at a formative moment, before later decades of accelerated coastal development transformed much of the Topsail Island region into a more densely built tourist destination.

One of the map’s most distinctive qualities is its orthophoto style, integrating aerial photographic imagery with topographic and cultural information. This gives the landscape an unusually immediate, almost documentary character: roads, canals, shorelines, settlements, and vegetation patterns appear not merely as symbols, but as part of a recognizable coastal environment. The result is a compelling hybrid of map and image, combining the authority of survey cartography with the realism of aerial observation. For a place like Surf City, where sand, water, marsh, and development interlace in delicate patterns, the orthophoto approach is particularly evocative. It allows the viewer to understand not only where features lie, but how the geography of barrier coast, sound, and mainland shaped everyday movement and land use.

Surf City anchors the eastern portion of the map, set against the Atlantic Ocean coastline and the sheltered waters of Topsail Sound. The town’s geography is defined by contrast: open ocean beaches on one side, quieter sound-side waters and inlets on the other. This arrangement made the area attractive for fishing, boating, beach recreation, and seasonal tourism, while also exposing it to the dynamic forces of storms, erosion, and shifting coastal morphology. The map’s careful rendering of waterways, shorelines, and access routes reveals the practical realities of life along the North Carolina coast. Canals, roads, and developed areas mark the human imprint, while the surrounding sounds and lowlands speak to a landscape still governed by tide, water, and weather.

Inland from Surf City, the map includes Holly Ridge and nearby places such as Cypress, Eoscome, Watha, Line Branch, and Little River, presenting a broader view of the coastal plain behind the barrier island. This region is flatter and more subdued than mountainous topographic landscapes, but its subtle drainage systems, creeks, branches, wetlands, and transportation corridors are no less important. The USGS’s attention to elevation and landform helps reveal how even modest changes in terrain influence settlement, road placement, and water movement. Holly Ridge itself, positioned on the mainland, provides a counterpoint to the beach-oriented identity of Surf City, suggesting the interconnected inland-coastal economy that supported the area through agriculture, forestry, military proximity, local commerce, and later, tourism.

As a historical document, “Holly Ridge” offers a fascinating glimpse of southeastern North Carolina in the early 1980s, a period when coastal communities were beginning to experience intensifying recreational and residential growth. The map records roads, canals, settled areas, and land-use patterns before later waves of construction altered the visual and economic character of much of the region. Its value lies not only in its navigational precision, but in the quiet evidence it preserves: where development had taken hold, where open land remained, and how communities related to the ocean, sounds, and inland waterways. Created by the United States Geological Survey, an institution synonymous with rigorous national mapping, it is both a practical topographic record and an elegant historical portrait of the Topsail coast.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
