Titled Munich. Muenchen, this finely engraved city plan was created in 1832 by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and later issued in 1844 by Baldwin & Cradock. It epitomizes the Society’s mission to fuse accuracy with accessibility, presenting a lucid urban portrait crowned by an inset prospect from the east. That panoramic vignette pairs beautifully with the plan’s meticulous street grid, inviting the viewer to read the city both diagrammatically and as lived scenery. As an early 19th-century snapshot of a capital in transformation—modernizing boulevards, expanding quarters, and enduring medieval cores—it is a notably compelling city map. The hand-colored delineation of districts underscores civic structure, while the careful annotation of churches, public buildings, and greenswards reveals a metropolis balancing dynastic prestige with everyday movement.

The plan captures Munich at the moment when neoclassical ambition reshaped its northern reach. The axial sweep of Ludwigstraße anchors the rational grid of Maxvorstadt, with Theresienstraße and Türkenstraße establishing a cultured quarter that radiates toward Königsplatz. Here, the city’s new architectural language emerges around museum precincts and ordered squares, the clarity of the engraving carefully distinguishing monumental fronts from domestic blocks. To the west, Karlstraße and the bustle of Karlsplatz define a pivotal hinge between old town and new avenues, while Sonnenstraße traces the arc where fortifications once stood. Northward, Hohenzollernstraße and Ungererstraße point toward the greenery that made the city so livable, with Widenmayerstraße suggesting an elegant promenade along the Isar’s bank.

At the map’s center, the historic Altstadt is rendered with rare intimacy. Blumenstraße, Bäckerstraße, Müllerstraße, and Nussbaumstraße thread a close-knit fabric of trades, markets, and workshops, all oriented toward venerable landmarks. The twin towers of the Frauenkirche dominate the skyline; the Residenz and Hofgarten proclaim courtly power and cultivated leisure; the Theatine church stands as a baroque counterpoint to neoclassical order. Karlsplatz—linked by Elisenstraße, Karlstraße, and Schillerstraße—reads as a grand civic threshold, channeling traffic and ceremony into the core. The cartographer’s legending of public buildings and churches, coupled with measured street widths and well-defined squares, transforms the plan into a guidebook to urban life as much as a tool of orientation.

South and east, the Isar’s breadth and braided channels are decisive protagonists. The map charts bridges and quays that knit the riverbank suburbs to the core, with Tegernseer Landstraße carrying the old road toward Giesing. Geyerstraße and Plinganserstraße lead into Sendling’s industrious lanes; Am Kloster signals monastic precincts and long-standing religious influence. Dultstraße and Praterstraße evoke Munich’s festive rhythms—fairs, markets, and riverside recreation—showing how commerce and celebration shaped the urban day. Widenmayerstraße’s waterside course, together with embanked greens and open parcels, demonstrates how the city leveraged the Isar for amenity as well as movement. The inset view from the east amplifies this story, staging bridges and towers against the river’s luminous sweep.

This second edition exemplifies the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge’s pedagogical craft: engraved precision, legible type, and restrained outline color to differentiate districts without sacrificing clarity. Issued under Baldwin & Cradock, it belongs to a celebrated program that married city plans with broader geographic education, turning complex places into decipherable texts. Here, the urban structure is taught by example—routes like Schwanthalerstraße and Sonnenstraße define rings and radials; Ungererstraße and Hohenzollernstraße forecast northern growth; Tegernseer Landstraße and Plinganserstraße trace older paths outward. For historians and collectors alike, the map offers both documentary authority and aesthetic poise, preserving Munich at the threshold of modernity, where river, road, and reforming vision meet.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
