In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, visitors came from across the country to “take the waters,” transforming the town into one of Indiana’s most fashionable resort destinations. Nearby West Baden Springs, equally storied, evokes the era of opulent spa hotels and health tourism, when architecture, leisure, and landscape converged in the hills of southern Indiana. On this 1951 sheet, these communities appear not as isolated landmarks but as part of a lived regional network, connected by roads, rail lines, valleys, and the surrounding agricultural and forested terrain.
