Edmund Edel’s 1897 poster for the ‘Perfect’ Bier-Siphon turns the serving of beer into a brisk piece of comic theatre. A gleaming siphon occupies the centre of the composition, flanked by a jovial, moustachioed man raising his glass and a red-haired woman operating the dispenser. Above them, the word ‘Perfect’ appears in emphatic orange lettering: at once a brand name, a promise and the poster’s immediate visual command.

Created for the Siphon-Bierverlag Berolina in Berlin, the design belongs to a period in which modern commercial advertising was becoming an increasingly conspicuous part of urban life. Edel was a German illustrator and graphic artist whose career encompassed posters and other forms of popular visual culture. Here, rather than explaining the appliance in technical terms, he makes it memorable through character, colour and action. The product is not isolated like a diagram; it is presented as the animated centre of sociability, linking mechanical novelty with the familiar pleasures of a shared drink.

A closer look

The composition is densely arranged, with scarcely any unused space. At the left, the man’s broad face and thick moustache are rendered with humorous exaggeration. His expression, together with the glass held aloft, supplies an instant endorsement more persuasive than a lengthy slogan. Opposite him, the woman leans towards the siphon, her hands directing attention to its tap and glass chamber. Their gestures create a visual circuit: dispenser, pouring hand, glass and expectant drinker.

Colour clarifies this activity. Strong orange accents in the lettering and beer are set against cooler blues in the siphon, while the woman’s green clothing introduces a further saturated note. A warm beige ground allows these blocks of colour to remain distinct without introducing a distracting setting. Depth is deliberately compressed; figures and apparatus appear to share one shallow graphic plane, held together by clean contours and abrupt tonal contrasts.

Small details prevent the bold design from becoming impersonal. The woman’s blouse combines stripes and checked passages, setting up a lively pattern beside the smoother metal and glass of the dispenser. Subtle highlights suggest the siphon’s reflective fittings, while the beer itself is crowned with pale foam. Near the lower edge, a plate of dark food adds the suggestion of a table and meal without developing into a complete interior. The company information below anchors the scene in Berlin commerce, balancing the oversized brand name at the top.

Context and significance

Although the poster predates the radically pared-back German advertising styles of the early twentieth century, it already demonstrates the value of economy and hierarchy. One product, two expressive figures and a single dominant word are enough to communicate the message. The eye first catches the orange title, then descends to the blue siphon and finally moves between the two drinkers. Illustration and typography function as a unified sales argument rather than as separate elements.

What gives the design its continuing interest is this combination of practical promotion and exuberant character. Edel transforms a beer-dispensing device into the pivot of an encounter, using the theatrical faces and tightly coordinated gestures to animate what might otherwise have been an ordinary household or commercial object. The result is a particularly vivid document of late nineteenth-century beverage advertising: direct, convivial and graphically assured.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
