A cluster of cool blue flowers rises from elongated green leaves, leaning gently towards the right rather than occupying the strict centre of the pale ground. This asymmetry gives the study a remarkably natural poise: the specimen appears carefully arranged, yet never rigid, with buds, open blossoms and foliage gathered into a single lucid botanical portrait.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Working in Paris at a time of intense interest in plant collecting, classification and horticulture, he united close observation with an exceptional sense of pictorial refinement. Choix des plus belles fleurs—a title meaning “Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”—belongs to the mature phase of his career, when his reputation for reconciling scientific information with decorative grace was firmly established. The plate reflects a culture in which botanical imagery served several audiences at once: naturalists could attend to structure, gardeners to the character of the plant, and artists and designers to its rhythm, colour and form.
A closer look
The flowering cluster forms the visual centre of gravity. Its rounded petals shift from stronger blue near their bases to paler, almost translucent tones at the edges, producing volume without dramatic shadow. Individual blossoms overlap, but their contours remain distinct; Redouté preserves the construction of each flower while allowing the group to read as a soft mass of colour. Tiny green buds beneath the open blooms introduce another stage of growth and prevent the arrangement from becoming too uniformly finished.
To the left, a sequence of narrow leaves creates a firmer counterpoint to the rounded flowers. Their greens range from fresh, light notes to deeper tones along the central stem, while delicate veins and restrained shading suggest variations in surface and thickness. A smaller, lighter leaf near the lower left subtly extends the composition outwards. These details are not crowded together: ample negative space isolates each contour, making the changing angles of stem, leaf and petal unusually easy to follow.
The background moves almost imperceptibly between warm cream and the faintest pale green. Against it, the blues remain cool but gentle, while the foliage provides the strongest tonal structure. At the lower right, the finely written name “Podalyria Australis” anchors the otherwise floating specimen within the conventions of botanical nomenclature. The slight modulation of the script’s strokes adds a human, calligraphic note to an image governed by exact observation.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
