Full pink blossoms gather in the upper half of the composition, their densely layered petals shifting from pale blush at the edges to deeper rose around the folded centres. Beneath them, serrated leaves and slender thorned stems form a poised botanical architecture: balanced enough to feel decorative, yet sufficiently varied to retain the irregularity of a living specimen.
Redouté was among the most celebrated flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for combining close botanical observation with exceptional compositional refinement. His career unfolded during a period of intense European interest in plant collection, classification and horticulture, when botanical illustration served both scientific study and an expanding public fascination with cultivated flowers. This rose belongs to that culture of attentive looking. Its distinguishing structures are carefully recorded, but they are arranged with the clarity and grace of an independent work of art.
A closer look
The principal blossoms occupy the upper centre, where overlapping petals create the greatest concentration of colour and detail. Their outlines are softened by delicate tonal transitions: some outer petals appear almost translucent, while darker shading within the blooms gives them volume. The flowers turn at subtly different angles, preventing the cluster from becoming rigidly symmetrical and allowing each head to reveal a different arrangement of folds.
Across the middle of the study, the rose’s foliage supplies a cooler, more structured counterpoint. Leaves fan out on either side of the main stem, each one distinguished by pale veins, toothed margins and gentle variations of green. Their changing orientations are particularly effective: one surface faces the viewer directly, another tilts away, while others overlap to create shallow but convincing depth. Along the upper-right stem, a line of small thorns introduces a sharper detail amid the smooth petals and broad leaves.
Near the lower left, several compact buds trace an earlier stage of flowering. Their restrained pinks echo the open roses above, while the narrowing stem leads the eye towards the labels beneath the specimen. The inscriptions include the botanical name “Rosa parvi-flora”, the French “Rosier à pétits fleurs.” and the imprint “Imprimerie de Rémond.” These lines of text anchor the airy composition within the conventions of a documented botanical plate without competing with the plant itself.

Redouté’s mature work helped establish a model for botanical illustration in which scientific usefulness and aesthetic pleasure were not opposing aims. The specimen is presented without a garden setting, vase or anecdotal detail; the empty ground removes distraction and makes every branching stem, emerging bud and serrated leaf available for inspection. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
