Fritz Rumpf’s Söhnlein Rheingold (1910–1913), dated 1910, turns the enjoyment of sparkling wine into a poised study in colour and gesture. Against a deep blue ground, an elegantly dressed woman raises a stemmed glass to her lips, her vivid yellow clothing and broad-brimmed hat creating an immediate, almost luminous contrast. A bottle stands prominently at the left, while the brand name runs across the lower edge in large yellow lettering. Figure, product and typography are compressed into a closely cropped composition whose decorative polish never obscures its commercial purpose.

The poster belongs to a period when European advertising was becoming increasingly sophisticated in its use of illustration. Rather than relying on a dense inventory of information, designers could give a product a recognisable social atmosphere: here, leisure, fashionable dress and a carefully controlled sense of refinement. Rumpf, a German artist associated with graphics and design, presents Söhnlein Rheingold not merely as a beverage but as part of an elegant modern ritual. The emphatic branding remains unmistakable, yet it is integrated into an image with the visual economy and ornamental assurance of early twentieth-century poster art.

A closer look

The woman dominates the vertical format, but the arrangement is distinctly asymmetrical. Her face and glass occupy the centre, while the upright bottle at the left forms a darker counterweight. The eye moves naturally from her shaded hat and softly highlighted hair to the raised hand, the rim of the glass and finally the bottle. That sequence makes the drinking gesture the hinge of the entire design: the product is shown, named and apparently enjoyed within a single sweep of the composition.

Rumpf’s palette is deliberately limited and forceful. Saturated yellow stands sharply against the cool blue background, with black outlines and lettering giving the design weight and definition. The colours are largely flat, preserving the crisp legibility required of a poster, but small tonal variations keep the figure from feeling diagrammatic. Shadows beneath the hat brim model the face; pale accents articulate the ruffles of the blouse; and the woman’s hair is touched with softer strokes that introduce a suggestion of movement.

Several details temper the poster’s boldness with close observation. A patterned yellow band circles the wide hat, echoing the colour of the clothing and the lettering below. One hand holds the glass with studied delicacy, while the other rests at table level, stabilising the otherwise rising movement of arm and drink. The glass catches a narrow highlight along its rim, and the bottle label contains smaller lettering beneath the more immediately legible brand name. These details reward a closer view without disrupting the design’s instant graphic clarity.

Context and significance

Söhnlein Rheingold demonstrates how beverage advertising of the period could borrow the visual language of fashionable illustration. The woman is not presented within an elaborate interior or narrative scene; instead, dress, posture and colour provide all the necessary associations. This simplification was practical—posters needed to communicate quickly—but it also produced a distinctive kind of modern image, one in which a few carefully selected forms could establish both identity and mood.

The relationship between text and figure is especially effective. The name at the foot of the composition acts as a strong visual base, while the bottle supplies a second, object-based statement of the brand. Above them, the woman’s yellow silhouette carries the same colour upwards through the blue field. Rumpf thereby makes branding part of the composition rather than an addition to it: an advertisement whose persuasive force lies as much in its formal control as in its message.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
