Mucha, the Czech artist born in 1860, became one of the defining figures of Art Nouveau and of the richly ornamented visual culture of Belle Époque Paris. His work moved readily between posters, jewellery, interiors and architectural decoration, dissolving conventional distinctions between fine and applied art. The Fouquet boutique offered an especially appropriate setting for this approach. Here, imagery was not conceived as an isolated picture but as part of a commercial façade, bringing artistic design into the everyday spectacle of the modern city.
A closer look
The woman’s face provides the composition with its quiet point of focus. Her profile is drawn with economical precision: a clean line follows the brow, nose, lips and chin, while the eye is given just enough detail to create a lively, alert expression. She looks towards the edge of the roundel rather than directly outwards, introducing a gentle lateral movement that prevents the tightly framed design from becoming static.
Around this poised centre, Mucha lets ornament take over. The hair forms a sequence of sinuous curls across the upper part of the design, its flowing strands echoed by the fabric descending over the shoulder at lower right. The pale blue head covering, punctuated by darker rounded motifs, supplies a cool counterpoint to the dominant oranges and browns. These areas are layered with minimal shading, so that pattern, contour and colour remain immediately legible.
The circular construction is crucial to the design’s character. There is little empty space: hair, scarf and garment press towards the perimeter, filling the field without obscuring the clarity of the profile. A thick black boundary gives the roundel the visual authority of a medallion, while the shallow arrangement of broad colour zones suits an image intended to participate in a façade. Even small details—the repeated blue spots, the fine curls near the crown and the folds at the shoulder—are coordinated into a single ornamental rhythm.

Art Nouveau sought to create unified environments in which architecture, furnishings, lettering and figurative decoration belonged to the same visual language. Mucha’s designs are particularly recognisable for their elongated contours, idealised female figures and botanical or textile-like patterning. In the Fouquet project, these qualities became part of an urban interior and shopfront rather than merely embellishing a printed advertisement. Art and commerce met directly: the boutique itself became a designed visual experience.
This roundel retains the immediacy associated with Mucha’s poster work, yet it contains no promotional wording or crowded narrative. Its message is carried instead by colour, silhouette and the elegance of the figure. The close crop and circular border give the woman the presence of a decorative icon, while the flowing lines keep the eye moving continuously between face, hair, scarf and frame—an eloquent example of Mucha’s ability to make the human figure inseparable from ornament.

Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.
We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
