austrian-genuine-pilsener-vintage-beer-poster-by-theodor-zasche-1910
Austrian Genuine Pilsener Vintage Beer Poster by Theodor Zasche, 1910

Theodor Zasche’s Austrian Genuine Pilsener Beer, created around 1910, builds its appeal around a smiling woman raising a tall glass of pale, foaming beer. Set slightly to the right of centre, she emerges from an abundant display of flowers, foliage and brewing ingredients, her white headpiece and traditional dress standing out crisply against a clear yellow ground. The composition is crowded without becoming confused: warm colour, emphatic outlines and large lettering combine to deliver the advertisement’s message with immediate theatricality.

The poster belongs to the lively commercial culture of pre-war Central Europe, when illustrated advertising was becoming an increasingly prominent part of urban visual life. Zasche, an Austrian artist working at the turn of the century, brings together decorative illustration and direct brand communication. Pilsener beer already possessed an international reputation, and the English-language wording—together with the naming of the Borneo Company Limited as sole importer—places the design within a wider network of export, distribution and overseas promotion. Its reference to Pilsen as Austrian also reflects the political geography of the period, before the dissolution of Austria-Hungary after the First World War.

A closer look

The raised glass provides the poster’s clear focal point. Fine pale highlights along its surface sharpen the impression of coolness, while the golden drink echoes the expansive yellow background. Zasche gives the woman’s face more modelling than the surrounding graphic forms: gentle shadows around her cheeks and eyes lend her presence, while the folds of her costume are simplified into broad, legible shapes. Her gesture is both a toast and a demonstration, presenting the beer as the centre of the scene.

A wooden planter stretches across the lower portion of the design, its grain and panelled surface introducing an earthy brown beneath the brighter colours above. From it rises a dense arrangement of green leaves and small pink and purple blossoms. Hops appear along the left margin, while wheat-like stalks rise at the right, framing the figure with ingredients associated with brewing. These natural forms create a decorative border, but they also connect the finished drink to cultivation and abundance.

The upper part of the poster adds a note of institutional authority. An ornate eagle-bearing coat of arms occupies the area above the figure, balanced by a smaller circular emblem in the upper-right corner. Below, the words “AUSTRIAN GENUINE PILSENER BEER” form a heavy typographic base. Smaller lines identify the First Pilsen Brewery and state that the beer was bottled at the brewery in Pilsen, while the lowest text draws attention to the registered brand and importer. The hierarchy is carefully judged: figure and glass attract the eye first, the product name follows, and the practical commercial information rewards closer inspection.

Context and significance

Zasche’s design demonstrates how early twentieth-century posters compressed pleasure, identity and information into a single memorable surface. Rather than presenting the bottle alone, it associates the beer with hospitality, regional costume and a flourishing natural world. Heraldic devices and registration notices communicate legitimacy; flowers and grain supply warmth; the raised glass turns consumption into a convivial public gesture.

The result is a particularly vivid example of beverage advertising before modern photographic campaigns became dominant. Its shallow space, flat areas of saturated colour and sharply separated forms were well suited to rapid viewing, yet the smaller emblems, botanical details and tiers of lettering reveal a surprisingly intricate design beneath the immediate cheerfulness.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
