Clausen’s Vintage Ale & Porter Poster by Moritz Ulffers, 1877

Moritz Ulffers’s Chas. C. Clausen’s Ales & Porter. Brewery, created in 1877, turns a brewery advertisement into a scene of exuberant industry. At its centre stands a large brewing tub, encircled by cherubic figures who pour, measure, carry and celebrate. Barrels, glasses, straw and trailing foliage crowd the horizontal composition, while rich orange, warm beige and soft gold give the entire scene the glow of a prolonged festive toast.

The print belongs to a period in which nineteenth-century businesses were developing increasingly sophisticated visual identities. Lithographic advertising could do far more than announce a company name: it associated goods with a particular atmosphere and set of values. Here, Clausen’s brewery is presented through abundance, activity and conviviality. The address printed along the lower edge — “BREWERY, 59th STREET & 11th AVENUE, NEW YORK” — anchors that theatrical imagery to a specific urban enterprise, linking playful allegory with the practical geography of commerce.

A closer look

The eye is first drawn to the central vessel and the cluster of small bodies arranged around it. Their varied poses keep the scene in motion: one figure appears occupied with measuring or pouring at the upper left, while another raises a glass triumphantly in the upper right. Below, figures attend to barrels and straw, extending the brewing narrative into the foreground. Rather than presenting manufacture as heavy labour, Ulffers recasts it as an energetic pageant in which work and leisure become almost indistinguishable.

Fine outlines distinguish the figures’ expressions, limbs and gestures against broader fields of colour. Pale pink flesh tones stand out from the deeper oranges and light browns of the brewing equipment, while restrained shading rounds the barrels and bodies. Highlights on the glasses and pale froth introduce small points of brightness. Vines and floral motifs weave between the figures, filling otherwise vacant spaces and strengthening the impression of fecundity without interrupting the main action.

Typography forms an essential part of the design rather than a separate caption. “CHAS. C. CLAUSEN’S ALES & PORTER” stretches across the upper portion in decorative lettering, its ornamental flourishes matching the lively intricacy below. The brewery address is rendered more directly in a serif face at the bottom, where it supplies the factual information after the spectacle has caught the eye. A delicate border contains the crowded arrangement, giving order to a composition that otherwise seems ready to spill beyond its edges.

Context and significance

Ales and porter were closely embedded in the social and commercial life of expanding nineteenth-century cities. As production and mass-market consumption grew, breweries needed recognisable public images as well as reliable distribution. Ulffers’s advertisement reflects that change: the company name is prominent, but the design’s persuasive force lies equally in its colour, characters and memorable mood. Brewing is represented not through an austere view of machinery or premises, but through a fanciful visual shorthand for plenty, pleasure and industrious craft.

The result is both an advertisement and a compact example of late nineteenth-century commercial design. Its warm palette, decorative lettering and densely choreographed figures reveal how promotional art could combine practical information with elaborate storytelling. Even the smallest participants have individual gestures and expressions, rewarding close attention long after the bold brewery name has delivered its immediate message.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
