cusenier-oxygenee-vintage-absinthe-poster-by-nicolas-francisco-tamagno-1896
Cusenier Oxygénée Vintage Absinthe Poster by Nicolas Francisco Tamagno, 1896

Nicolas Francisco Tamagno’s L’absinthe Cusenier Oxygénée, created in 1896, turns the preparation of a fashionable aperitif into an exuberant public performance. A jovial man in evening dress leans towards a delicate glass, bottle poised in one hand, while the richly ornamented setting crowds around him in greens, golds and warm orange-browns. Rather than presenting the drink as a static commodity, Tamagno makes pouring it the centre of the composition: an animated gesture surrounded by conspicuous branding, decorative pattern and a convivial smile.

The poster belongs to the flourishing advertising culture of the fin de siècle, when bold commercial images became a defining feature of the modern city. Absinthe was closely associated with Parisian cafés and nightlife, while posters increasingly operated on two levels—as immediate publicity and as ambitious graphic design. Tamagno, an Italian-born artist active in the late nineteenth century, uses the visual language of Art Nouveau-era advertising to hold attention at a distance: emphatic lettering, flattened areas of colour, sinuous ornament and a figure whose theatrical presence makes the product memorable.

A closer look

The composition is deliberately off-centre. The drinker occupies the right-hand side, his dark tuxedo and crisp shirt-front giving his body a strong silhouette against the decorative background. His rounded, cheerful face and forward-leaning posture bring an almost conversational energy to the scene. Subtle shading across the collar and sleeves gives the figure more volume than the flatter floral motifs behind him, allowing him to project beyond the patterned surface.

At the lower left, a small ornate table gathers together the objects of the ritual: the elegant glass, a dish, a spoon resting near the rim and loosely crumpled newspapers. These incidental details give the advertisement the air of a café moment already in progress rather than a carefully arranged display. Highlights glint across the glass and clear bottle, while the vivid green of the absinthe stands out against the cream, gold and orange tones around it. The prominently labelled Cusenier bottle anchors the lower portion of the design, ensuring that the eye returns from the man’s face and pouring hand to the advertised name.

Across the upper field, stylised flowers and geometric borders create a dense decorative framework. A woman’s face appears to be embedded within a stained-glass-like motif, a quieter image within the larger spectacle. The principal wording, “L’Absinthe Cusenier Oxygénée”, is integrated into this ornament rather than confined to a plain caption. Nearby, the slogan “C’est ma santé” adds a characteristically emphatic sales message, while Tamagno’s signature is visible at the lower right. The typography, figure and product are arranged as mutually reinforcing parts of a single design.

Context and significance

By the 1890s, the urban poster had become an unusually visible meeting point between art and commerce. Designers needed to communicate rapidly in busy streets, cafés and entertainment districts, encouraging the use of simplified forms, vigorous contrasts and lettering capable of carrying across space. Tamagno’s design answers those demands without sacrificing detail: its silhouette is clear from afar, yet close viewing reveals the bottle label, bubbles in the drink, the spoon and the scattered press.

The result is both advertisement and compact social scene. Its persuasive force lies less in explaining the beverage than in constructing an atmosphere around it—fashionable dress, leisure, ornament and good humour. That combination makes L’absinthe Cusenier Oxygénée a particularly vivid expression of fin-de-siècle visual culture, in which a branded bottle could become the focal point of a sophisticated and highly theatrical composition.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
