distillerie-les-deux-lions-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-1910
Distillerie les Deux Lions Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster, 1910

Véritable Vieux Système, Distillerie les Deux Lions, Joseph Theunissen, Hasselt was created in 1910 by Lithographie Artistique as a richly theatrical advertisement for the Belgian distillery. Against a field of emphatic red, a monumental metallic jug rises between two upright lions, each presenting a glass upon a tray. Warm gold and orange details intensify the display, while a fan of radiating lines behind the vessel turns an everyday commercial object into the commanding centre of an almost heraldic composition.

The poster belongs to a period in which lithographic advertising had become an increasingly sophisticated part of consumer culture. Makers could combine assertive typography, memorable emblems and richly coloured imagery in designs intended to establish a brand at a glance. The location is significant: Hasselt has a long association with Belgian gin production, and the Distillerie les Deux Lions draws directly upon that regional identity. Its paired lions operate not merely as decoration but as unmistakable brand figures, giving the name of the distillery a vivid visual form.

A closer look

The design is organised with striking symmetry. At the top, the words “VÉRITABLE VIEUX SYSTÈME” curve across the composition in large, ornate lettering, followed by the smaller but still prominent “DISTILLERIE LES DEUX LIONS”. This descending hierarchy guides the eye from product claim to producer, before the great jug takes over. Its rounded body is modelled with crisp highlights and darker shading, creating a polished metallic effect that stands out sharply against the saturated background.

Below and to either side, the lions rise on their hind legs like supporters on a coat of arms. Their fur, faces and muscular bodies are described with considerably more detail than the broad blocks of colour around them. Yet the pose has a playful commercial twist: rather than guarding a shield, each lion balances a tray and glass. The result combines regal authority with the ritual of serving a drink, making the brand both imposing and immediately legible.

Smaller details reward closer attention. Reflections glint within the glasses; engraved ornament appears across the jug; and patterned borders contain the exuberant central display. The sunburst above reinforces the vertical axis and sends the eye back towards the vessel, while the lower inscription gives particular prominence to the name “Joseph THEUNISSEN” and to Hasselt. Dense lines of supporting text sit beneath the pictorial drama, completing the transition from emblematic spectacle to practical advertisement.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century beverage posters frequently had to communicate several things at once: the nature of the product, the identity of its maker and an impression of reliability or distinction. Here, those tasks are distributed across the design. The lettering supplies the commercial information; the substantial jug gives the drink a tangible presence; and the lions lend the distillery a memorable visual signature. Red, orange and gold keep every part of the sheet within the same heated palette, preventing the abundance of detail from fragmenting the composition.

What makes this advertisement especially engaging is its confident mixture of practical promotion and decorative fantasy. It does not offer a quiet still life of a bottle or glass. Instead, it builds a miniature pageant around the product, with heraldic animals, radiant light and polished typography all directed towards a single name. The poster preserves a particularly vivid example of how regional beverage culture and modern graphic advertising met in Hasselt at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
