elixir-de-kempenaar-vintage-advertising-poster-by-ernest-godfridnon-1907
Elixir De Kempenaar Vintage Advertising Poster by Ernest Godfridnon, 1907

Ernest Godfridnon’s Elixir De Kempenaar, created in 1907, turns a beverage advertisement into a richly observed tavern scene. Elegantly dressed men and women gather around a table, their gestures and glances forming a lively circuit around the prominently placed bottle. Warm amber, orange and tobacco-brown tones suffuse the interior, while the bold decorative lettering along the lower edge gives the brand an emphatic visual anchor.

Godfridnon was a Belgian artist active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrated posters had become a particularly visible form of popular art. Designed to command attention in public space, commercial images of this period often relied on strong colour, memorable characters and immediately legible typography. Here, rather than isolating the advertised drink, Godfridnon places it at the centre of sociability: the product is presented through conversation, company and the cultivated atmosphere of the tavern.

A closer look

The central group is arranged with the informality of a conversation already under way. Figures of different heights overlap one another, creating a rhythmic silhouette and directing the eye back towards the table. At the upper left, an elderly woman in grey speaks with an animated gesture, introducing a note of movement amid the close gathering. On the lower right, a seated woman in a patterned dress and shawl watches the exchange, her quieter pose balancing the more demonstrative figures opposite her.

Godfridnon constructs the interior in layers. The foreground figures lead to the table and bottle in the middle distance, while further patrons and architectural details extend the scene behind them. A wall clock appears at the left and a large window opens the composition on the right, where paler light offsets the room’s predominantly warm palette. Patterned floor tiles strengthen the recession into space, their repeated geometry contrasting with the softer contours of clothing and faces.

Much of the poster’s character lies in its small contrasts of texture and ornament. Sturdy jackets sit beside softer shawls; patterned fabrics enliven the lower half of the design; and highlights across faces and garments suggest the gentle illumination of an enclosed social setting. The bottle remains clearly visible without disrupting the anecdotal quality of the scene. Beneath it all, the words “ELIXIR DE KEMPENAAR” provide a firm graphic base, converting the convivial episode above into a direct and memorable commercial message.

Context and significance

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the illustrated advertising poster occupied a fertile space between fine art and everyday visual culture. Artists could bring painterly modelling, narrative detail and decorative lettering to images intended for broad public circulation. Godfridnon’s design reflects that exchange: it functions efficiently as advertising, yet rewards prolonged attention through its ensemble of expressions, fabrics, furnishings and gestures.

Elixir De Kempenaar is especially engaging because it sells an atmosphere as much as a beverage. Its warm tonal range and densely connected figures make conviviality the central theme, while the typography ensures that the brand is never lost within the story. The result is a vivid example of early twentieth-century Belgian commercial art, poised between intimate genre scene and assertive graphic design.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
