The lowlands around Thessaloniki open as a softer, shadow-light basin where major rivers have built fertile plains. Eastward and southward, the Attica peninsula is framed by the mountains of Parnitha, Pentelikon, and Hymettus, their flanks stepping down toward the Saronic Gulf. Farther east, the long island of Euboea runs parallel to the mainland like a protected rampart, its interior ridges clearly articulated by the play of illumination across crest and valley.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hand of geology is also unmistakable along the Gulf of Corinth, where a rifted corridor separates central Greece from the Peloponnese.
