jay-pettibone-co-vintage-whiskey-poster-1878
Jay Pettibone & Co. Vintage Whiskey Poster, 1878

Jay Pettibone & Co., distillers, Buffalo, N.Y. (1878), by Wells & Hope Co., turns the business of whiskey into an unusually elaborate piece of commercial theatre. A young woman’s face occupies the centre, encircled by a gold-toned frame and wrapped in a patterned white scarf. Around her, emphatic lettering, ribbons, tassels, grain and labelled barrels build a compact emblem of the distillery’s identity. Warm browns and muted beige give the design an earthy foundation, sharpened by assertive passages of red, white and gold.

The catalogue records the commercial print as produced by Wells & Hope Co. in 1845 and later published under its 1878 title. It belongs to a period in which American businesses were increasingly using sophisticated printed graphics to project reliability, scale and modernity. Rather than simply naming Jay Pettibone & Co., the design gives the Buffalo firm a carefully constructed public face: agricultural abundance, recognisable products and ornamental richness are gathered into a single, highly legible advertisement.

A closer look

The graphic hierarchy begins at the top, where “JAY PETTIBONE & CO.” appears in bold red lettering enriched with gold accents and ornate borders. Decorative tassels occupy the upper corners, lending the heading something of the character of a banner or ceremonial sign. The eye then drops into the circular portrait below. Soft modelling across the woman’s cheeks and features contrasts with the poster’s flatter areas of colour, while curls and the delicate floral pattern of her scarf reward closer attention.

Beneath and beside the portrait, wooden barrels introduce the company’s products as tangible goods. Their inscriptions include “PURE RYE”, “SHIELDS BOURBON”, “CRYSTAL RYE”, “OLD MONONGAHELA” and “OLD NECTAR”. These names are not relegated to a secondary list; they are placed directly on the barrels, integrating information into the illustration. Subtle indications of wood grain give the vessels weight, while wheat sheaves curve around them, visually linking the finished spirits to their agricultural origins.

At the bottom, “DISTILLERS” is set in broad white lettering edged in red. Its scale anchors the composition and states the firm’s trade with immediate clarity. The arrangement is densely decorative but carefully controlled: the portrait supplies a focal point, the barrels establish the merchandise, and the large words at top and bottom act almost like architectural lintel and base. A subdued background prevents these competing elements from becoming visually confused.

Context and significance

Commercial graphics of this kind sit at an intriguing intersection between information, ornament and persuasion. Jay Pettibone & Co.’s products are differentiated by name—rye, bourbon, nectar and Monongahela among them—but the poster also sells a broader impression of enterprise. The abundance of grain, the substantial barrels and the polished typography suggest an organised, confident concern rather than a small or anonymous producer. Such imagery helped nineteenth-century businesses establish a memorable identity in an expanding industrial economy.

The central portrait is particularly effective because it softens what might otherwise have been a purely typographic trade notice. Set within its circular frame, the face functions almost as a pictorial seal, surrounded by the practical signs of production and commerce. The result is both advertisement and period document: a richly organised glimpse of how a Buffalo distiller presented its name, its range and its aspirations to a nineteenth-century public.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
